Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Google "Lemmings". That should be all you need to know.

Go down a big hill, swerve a couple times (almost hitting a cadillac on the second swoop), decide to pick something to run into before you go further down the steeper part of the hill. For bonus points pick a curb right in front of a fire hydrant. Hit the curb dead on and fly over the handle bars and land right on the hydrant. Scrape your arm up and pop your front tire. Also totally kink your handlebars, but make sure it appears the stem just turned rather than anything getting bent.

I saw a guy a few weeks ago riding around Hayes Valley (in SF) in full Ted Shred style (freewheel and no brakes)...he seemed to function pretty well. It's an effective technique when I don't feel like totally bombing down a hill and good to learn in case you ever break your chain and you ride brakeless.

Dude just hosted some sort of fixed gear bike competition in my town. I did not attend because I was too busy working and then sitting around at my house for a couple of hours while the other hipsters rode quantified who could ride backwards in circles the most.
