Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Messengers ride (stop & go) for more than 8 hours a day.

And most ride cross, or 29ers with brakes.

I drove my car brakeless once from Vancouver to Whistler. Burst a brakeline just at the ferry docks coming out of the city. That was an interesting trip.

All depends on the city, though in Portland I noticed a few more messengers riding geared bikes than a year ago - road and MTB.

Yep. 5-speed. It was also very late at night, so little traffic, and the handbrake worked.

that would have been something if you managed to pull that off with an automatic. it's still pretty damn awesome though.

Long continuous skid down the spiraling ramp of a parking garage, i think i went 5 floors or so, nearly hit one car, then the load of people on bikes ahead of me while i yell for them to keep moving to avoid crashing into them.

I went for a 60 mile ride with a group of about 250 riders yesterday and realized why I will probably always need a front brake. When you get into a paceline and are inches off the back tire of the bike in front of you, you need a brake. Especially if not everyone in the paceline has rode one recently. The paceline I was in at one point was very bad about suddenly slowing and then speeding right back up. I used my front brake more yesterday then I have all summer.

Being in a pace line i can definitely see the need for a brake. Anyways the front brake finally came off, lever, cable and brake all together was probably like 5 pounds! You don't need all the extra weight on a fixed bike.
