is the Scattante XRL Cross an OK starting point for a first FGSS?
i've been researching for the past 2 weeks now on my first SS bike. There are so many out there, and it's all so confusing. I've already got a commuter bike, so this one will be more of a fun bike. Nothing too crazy expensive though. I've narrowed it down to my preference of frames with larger diameter downtubes because i love the way that looks. So.. either a Leader 721TR, or a Scattante XRL Cross.
The leader with a cf fork and headset will be more expensive then the Scattante. Plus i can easily pull off the stickers of the Scattante. So.. question is.. is the Scat an ok platform to start from? Even though it's not a true fixie frame?

no you need a way to adjust chain tension.
it's an excellent CX/geared commuter build though.
the 721tr is infinitely better if you don't want gears.

Why not go with the Scattante SSR Frame? It's a frame built of SS or Fixies. I don't see why one would build their FGSS on a Cross frame.

If you just want to run a SS, not fixed, then you can run a chain tensioner. I have a xrl cross, and it is a nice bike. Aluminum kind of sucks, but its nice and light and quick. I guess you could get one of those eno ecentric hubs, but for that amount of money I would just put it towards a true SS frame. I would look for a used kona paddywahog, or bianchi san jose.

That frame will not work work with FG without a very expensive ENO hub. You can set it up SS with a chain tensioner, but thats just an additional complexity. Get a SSFG specific frame with horizontal track ends (not vertical dropouts), otherwise its just a suboptimal compromise. There are plenty of SSFG specific framesets you can get for a similar price. If you want a cyclocross frame look into an IRO Rob Roy.

I have an SSR as well. I got mine when they were on clearance this summer. Paid $186 shipped for the frame and fork after discounts and Team Perf points. Finally got it built up last week and have put about 60 miles on it (30 of that in one ride). Nice riding bike.
I'm riding in the Seagull Century next weekend.
If I were building a FGSS specific bike, I'd go with it or something similar, not a geared-specific frame.
