Cleaning d.a./ultegra headsets-- necessary?

I just had my old ultegra (600) headset pressed into my gf's iro.
when i pulled it out of my other bike, i realized that it was pretty dirty. the performance didn't seem to be affected (sealed bearings), but i'm wondering if it actually was and i just didn't notice.
I looked at my bob jackson's d.a. headset (90% identical to the 600) and realized that despite my regular maintainance and cleaning, there's a bit of very fine grit which has accumulated between the race and the lower cup. i've only pulled the fork twice (that i can remember) in the year-and-a-half since i've had the bike; both times i've cleaned the race and cup.
is this something that should be done regularly? if so, how many miles?
this bike only sees the street/road, so i can't imagine having to do it much if ever... curious.

you can disassemble the cartridge to clean & repack if needed. it probably wouldn't be a bad idea for a 15 year old HS. crap between the cartridge & race shouldn't matter much. a small band of old tube stretched around the headset will help keep the road sludge from sneaking in if the problem continues.
