Reload bag, bad purchase?

I got my reload civilian finally yesterday, and after using it all day to get around town/carry my books/etc, I found it pretty uncomfortable really. Enough so that it literally bruised my left shoulder. Do these things need to be broken in or have I just made a bad purchase? Anyone experience anything similar when they first got theirs?

I have found when I am primarily carrying books that I am MUCH more comfortable with my backpack as it keeps them in place on my back better. I still use my messenger for everything else (even with a book or two).

Be sure to tighten down whatever compression straps you have and consider extra closed foam padding.

Or get audio of all your books.

As for the bruising the shoulder, perhaps be certain the bag isn't shifting around. Keep the padding on the shoulder and snug up all your straps. See above re: backpack and apply to heavier loads (for me).

Does yours have a shoulder pad? Do you have some weird ergonomic issue? Were you carrying 50lbs or something?

Reload bags are generally very well thought of and there's a lot of good design in the bags, it seems like if you can't at least get the reload bag to feel comfortable most of the time that messenger bags might just not be for you.

shoulderbags work best when you're leaning forward, so the strap system doesn't just weigh down on one shoulder - the weight should be borne on the back, braced by the stabilizer strap.

of course, you also learned another lesson about carrying things. if they're heavy and you do it all day, it's going to hurt.

no matter what kind of bag you have.

What he said... messenger bags: good for riding around, not so hot for walking to class.

I live right by the reload factory in the new place i moved to in philly.

I bought one this weekend. Nice bag. I agree with queerpunk, this bag won't be as comfy if you are on a upright bike. You have to also cinch it tight for a proper fit. I think chrome bags are easier to use but the reload seems more comfy.
