messengering

Well, I start as a courier on Monday!! Im working in honolulu and the weather is almost allways great. Im riding an old nishiki mtb with some 1.5 slicks and a singlespeed conversion with my derailuer(however you spell it) as my chain tensioner. I also have made a few other improvements on the bike. I know all about riding in traffic and all that stuff but, im interested in making a fixed gear using an eno eccentric hub. Does anyone have anyexperience with this hub? Thanks.

No one wants to help you here. You have the number 1, super-uber Ultimate dream job for single white male/female. I am so jealous right now I hate kittens, relly cute kittens at that.
Never used to Eno hub, but know it comes from a quality MFR. If you are going to build a fixed gear, might as well just buy one: KHS, Bianchi, eBay Special, etc.
To be in Hawaii as a messenger is great, to be in Hawaii as a messenger AND have 2 bikes is the best!
Send us some poi and pineapples. Is the Jack in the Box still out there?

Ever hear of this dude:

he's outta Hilo, HI

Wow, who cares what you ride as long as your working in Hawaii.

But as for the Eno hub, you really might think about just getting a new bike. By the time you buy the hub, $160, then the rim and the nipples and the spokes, then on top of that paying someone to build it. You will reach $250 bucks pretty quickly.

Maybe just another older frame with horizontal dropouts so that you could put on a fli-flop hub? I guess it is all in where you want to put your money I guess.

To be a messenger in Hawaii, now that truly is paradise in my opinion.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll probably stick with this for now, untill i can find some cheap horizontal dropout frame. Yeah Hawaii's cool I've been here about 5yrs (ex military). I can't wait to start getting paid to ride!

Marines. Avionics with 1stMaw for 5yrs. I should probably get a job fixing planes, but I'd rather ride.

Damn sorry to hear that you are stuck in a place with such boring weather.

not that i live in hawaii, but i do know that the islands are made of volcanoes....id assume its hilly :)

inkdwheels 02-20-04 04:33 AM

Its only really hilly near the mountains. The island is divided length wise with mountains. Honolulu where i'll be working is all flat. And the commute in from Pearl City about 11miles with one incline for about 600yrds.

Semper Fi, Chesty!
Been to HI too, but with the Army (visiting some friends in the 25th ID).
Couldn't say I'd want to be stationed there though...

is there good mountain biking in the mountains?

inkdwheels 02-20-04 07:52 PM

Yeah there's tons. Lots of trails and even some places to downhill.

My boss did a big tandem thing on one of the islands a while back. Seems there is a down hill that will burn up a tandem drum somewhere around there. The guides make the touristas stop about half way down to let stuff cool off and nerves relax.

Coolest job ever!! I didnt have alot of runs (15) but I had a few far ones. I was at the office(downtown honolulu) and had to pick up a small box of staples by the airport (5 miles away) then take them to a construction site in waikiki (10 miles away). Other than that and carrying a doctors dirty laundry it was awesome.
