Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What's the fastest you've gone?

...On your fixed gear?

Just curious to know what kind of speeds people are hitting...

There are a few hills in Northern Michigan that are pretty nice. I am heading up there this week to ride the DALMAC. Last year I got 202 rpm (on my Garmin) using a 42x16 with 172.5mm. I think that is around 40 mph. Thats pretty mental and I can't take that for long.

Around Grand Rapids there are a few hills I regularly hit 180 rpms on.

I don't even know what I can get in a flat sprint any more...

Fastest with a downhill aid: 36.6mph (58.8 km/h)

My regular cruising speed range is 17-22, ordinarily keeping around 20mph.

Fastest I've achieved on the flat is 31.1mph (50km/h ish I think)

I run 46/17 on 700x23s. anything over 30mph starts to become pretty uncomfortable after a short while.

32 mph. I could probably do faster with high gearing on the track, but 32 is my in-town limit.

i was cruisin at 20~ mph tonight with 44/16 free. i actually suprised my self because any riding i've done before that has been putting around campus at ~8 mph. i also got a set of $10 flip/chops for my effort.

I did about 43mph on my fixie. 46x16. I know, sounds insane right? You should have seen me though. I was going down this big hill and my feet were straight out in front of me and the expression on my face was that of "I'm about to die a painful death" with my poor little front brake smoking like there was no tomorrow.

true story.
