Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Giant Bowery 72_'09_Ya seen it?

I saw one today at the LBS. They wanted $1020 for it. Unless it has $300 hidden under the saddle I am not sure why they want so much for it.

So it has a Sugino drive train. That's worth $100. Wheels are no big deal. It comes with cages and straps, just basic quality. Look at that saddle, yuck.

vintage style saddle on an aluminum bike with track drops and brakes hoods?

I like a lot of the parts individually, but put together it just seems confused and expensive. Also, those welds are ugly.

I rode one a couple of days ago. Felt nice, but overall looks kind of silly. The sloping top tube makes me want to vomit all over the bike. Yes, the welds on this are fugly, but I think the welds on all modern Giants are that way. The one I rode was priced at 899 and I thought that was still a little high.

okay... the stem is pretty cool.

that saddle, if it's what i think it is, is worth the extra 300.

the zen 175s are super nice too.

but aside from that, the bike can be crushed for all i care. having that seatpost on that bike is fg blasphemy.

I own an 06 bowery. I like it, even though it's a tank, and I only paid about 300 for it complete back in 06. I've obviously swapped out numerous parts and the way it's sitting right now is pretty ill. As for this bike, in my opinion (as most have pointed out already) that thing is FAR too overpriced.
I would MAYBE pay 600-700 for it. But it's ugly anyway.

Although I agree that most Giant products are total garbage (based on building them over and over and witnessing their terrible tolerances and quality control), I was thumbing through the '09 catalog and I must say that the '84 model Bowery caught my eye over the '72. White frame, black deep section wheelset, chrome and black accents and flat bars. Looked at least good enough to build one for the sales floor to try to encourage more singlespeeds instead of MTBs that everyone seems to think are "just perfect for ridin' around campus!"
Also, on a side note - I almost got killed by an SUV today. Everyone please ride safe!

I agree the 84' looks nice at least from the pics. I also work at a Giant dealer and we are getting one of the 84's for the floor to see if we can sell a $1K off the shelf fixed gear. FYI to everyone Giant has four Bowery models for 09'. Two (84 and 72) are $1K (+) and the other two are more basic ones and are around $600.
