Can I use a long cage derailleur on a 1x5 speed?

Why are short and medium cage derailleurs so hard to find? I just need a no-frills Shimano derailleur for a 32t front and 14-28t rear setup. Using a SRAM MRX 5-spd grip shift, which is only compatible with a Shimano rear derailleur. Jenson has the LX derailleur for $32, but it only comes in long. Will that work? I'm just afraid of a loose chain. Also, do I need a chain tensioner?

Wow I don't think you could have asked that question in a worse area of the forum than this

short cages are more common for road derailleurs than mountain derailleurs.

short cage derailleur would be best, though a long cage will work. You'll get more chain slap and extraneous shifts with the long cage. I'd bet you could find a NOS short-cage derailleur at your LBS for real cheap.
