WTF is going on with my bike? (i.e. help)

I am a relative n00b to fixed. Been riding fg for about a year, geared for 15+ years. Aside from basic maintenance, I dunno much about rebuilding hubs, etc. My fg is a 2008 Redline 925, which just started getting kooky on me about 2 hours ago. Basically, the rear cog is slipping when I pedal hard (i.e. off frame stand at red light). The first time it happened, I thought my chain had just broken. Then it happened 2 other times on same commute (all this morning), and I'm not riding it again until it's fixed. Something is obviouslly loose, or stripped, but I dunno where to start. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

it came off during a standing start? Your hub is stripped use the other side or buy a new wheel.

Was track standing at red light / intersection. Then got 3/4 of way across street, and it slipped. I'll pull the wheel off during lunch break and take a look at it.

it does sound like the tell-tale sign of stripped lockring threads on the hub

Lockring was finger loose. Threads didn't appear to be stripped, which is good. I'll have to run over to LBS later and get a lockring tool. Hopefully that will solve the issue. Thanks all.

It isn't enough to tighten the lockring. If the cog isn't tighter than ****, then as soon as you mash on the pedals the cog will tighten, effectively loosening the lockring. then the cog will be free to slam back and forth again, stripping whatever threads are left. Therefore do the following:

1. Mash hard up a hill.
2. Stop at the top without resisting the pedals.
3. Tighten your lockring.

That's it. This is simple but getting it wrong is a major cause of grief to fg noobs.

did the shop you bought it from install the lock ring? if your hub is stripped and useless you should blame them for not putting it on tight enough and make them give/build you a new wheel. same thing happened to me and the shop just gave me a new wheel

Yeah, they did...but that was awhile ago. Still worth a try if it is stripped.

Or a chain whip with a locking tool on it, like the Shimano one.

You don't need a chainwhip to install a cog. In fact a chainwhip alone will probably not get the cog tight enough. Ride hard up a hill, it will get your cog just about as tight as it can go.
