Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Well I converted my gary fisher mtb to a s/s yerstaday and my first thoughts upon riding was will I ever ride my '03 c-dale bad boy ever again. Oh man what a great way to ride. I was a little worried about hills but not a problem at all.

I took the bike to my lbs to discuss the methods open to converting. I asked about cost involved with me buying the parts and tools. So the mech told me to come by when I had a free hour or so to watch and learn. I took an old hyperglide and removed the cogs and added spacers, removed the ders, and attached a chain tensioner. Fantastic. What a great lbs. Nice, informative and doing the little things to ensure satisfaction and help keep me informed. Even sold me his used tensioner for $20 instead of a new $60 one. Total cost was $36.

Besides removing all the gears, I switched the rockshok for a cromo fork, from sunrims to my older mavic 231, and put 1" slicks on. The bike is so much lighter and alot faster and is a fun ride.
