Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Probably because one of the major reasons for going fixed gear / singlespeed in the first place is cost compared to a conventional shifty bike. People want a nice bike for as little as possible.

Because many of the people who read and post to this forum about fixed gears are demographically younger and therefore often don't have the same degree of disposable income as other types of cyclists?

in the end you just have to think what matters more - how much you spent on your bike or how well your bike rides.

shopping the used market for deals is pretty much where it's at though. i love the hunt and it's fulfilling to find a good deal vs. just pay full retail right off the bat, plus i don't mind a few scratches because new stuff drives me crazy trying to keep it looking new anyway. suckers pay that full retail...

thats the truth right there! I was also wondering why the hell is anodized stuff so much more than non anodized stuff? i was looking at nitto bullhorns and there like twice as much. i was also looking on ben's website and they have a bunch of anodized stuff but the prices compared to non anodized is crazy.

Because everything is waaaay over priced and I find it ridiculous. I am done shopping at local lbs, especially in my area, everything is going to be online shopping for me. I am all for supporting the LBS but when they start charging twice as much than normal you just lost a customer.

What is this in reference to? The Sugino 75 post? The Jamis that jumped in price 25%?

I think it's because we are the freindliest, most welcoming-est group out here. Either that, or people with questions about fixed gears are younger and more new to buying their own bikes/ parts.

why don't you ask your local bike shop if they will match the online price.
my local bike shops will usually. especailly if you special order and it doesn't need to sit on there shelve.
at least it give them some profit and a local guy would like some money over no money.
at least give them a chance to be cool and support your local economy.
try a couple local shop if not them go online.
or buy used.

and really its all the republicans fault so make sure you go vote............

P.S.

I undertand looking for a deal and comparing expensive with cheap but.... just whining about how expensive they are.

go to your local bike shop....pick up a sugino messenger drive side crank arm then pick up a sugino 75 crank are preferably with chainring on......

I'm sorry if you read anything into the * * * * (asterisks) that I typed.

But I am right, yes, that this whole post is meant to be insulting?

You have complained that fixed gear forum people always whine about how much things cost.
You seem to look down on these people. Like, 'if you have to ask, obviously you can't afford it.'

Does this help your sense of superiority, that you can afford any and all bike parts? Anybody with a couple grand to throw around can impress the easily impressed. It's really a pretty rinky-dink pond to want to be the big fish of.

Or maybe you're somehow offended that some people are ignorant of some of the monetary aspects of cycling. So ignorant that you had to start your own thread and share your knowledge of how 'ugly is cheap. pretty is expensive.' Fair enough. That's what brings us together here. Sharing knowledge. I'm sure anyone who's read anything Sheldon Brown has written understands that. Not everybody's LBS carries multiple Sugino singlespeed cranks for comparison. Some people go to the internet as a resource. And ask questions. If all this offends you so much, I don't know what you're doing here.

But then you bring up the oh-so-tired hipster argument. Seriously, more people on the SSFG forum whine about hipsters than prices. It's old.

what you don't understand.

i ignore stuff on this board i don't like. the stuff that mildly annoys me, i post a rebuttle. but one positive thing here is that for every 10 dumb posts, there is still one that is helpful.

i'm voting republican, btw.

Agreed that at least 95% of the questions on here are 'silly.' Or completely pointless. Or could be answered quicker by searching than by asking the question in the first place.

I'm often very tempted to write something nasty. But usually if I bite my tongue for a minute, someone else carefully explains that there is a premium placed on things with an NJS stamp. And NJS is Keirin Racing. In Japan. Where racers have to ride bikes with standardized components. Because there's betting... and blah, blah, blah.

Yes, people have to have really dumb stuff explained to them all the time.

But maybe if you don't want to explain it to them, you could maybe say something entertaining to the other people who've heard all this a million times too. Or just keep your mouth shut. Cuz being a jerk doesn't really help anyone.
