Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I need a smaller chainring for my Windsor the Hour. Help?

Hello. I've been going around the local bike shops around here, and everyone is little or no help in helping me find a chainring. My bike has a 46t up front and i'm looking for a 38t-42t. How do I know if a ring will fit my crank arms?

Or can somebody recommend a site or a link of a smaller chainring that will fit?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I believe you need to know the BCD of the crankset. They usually come it 110 mm, 130mm or 144mm. Once you know which one you have it is just a matter of finding the one you are looking for. On a side note, if you can find an old 10 speed that has your same bolt pattern the inside should be right around 42t. Good luck!

Any 130 BCD chainring should work.

I would find it VERY surprising if your local bike shops have no 130 BCD 42t chainrings in stock...

They really don't. All of them "just sold the last one" even though I barely see anyone on bikes around here.

You would have to tell me your BCD for me to find a chain ring for you. Also, pray you don't have 144mm BCD, because you will never find a 42t for that.

If you have 130mm BCD (you probably do) you should be able to use this.

YMMV

You know how many chainrings you'd need to stock just to cover the most commonly used ones? In different quality levels? Then different bcds? Single speed? Ramped?

We've already ascertained in post #3 that it's 130.
