My SS makes a weird knocking noise whenever i am pedaling hard? I repacked the bearings in the crank and the rear wheel...Any ideas what else is could be?

do you feel anything like a the chain skipping? the freewheel could be toasted.

Have you done a general drive train check through? Chain ring bolts, cog condition? Most of my weird drive train noises have been chain ring bolts.

The cog is brand new should i take it to the bike shop i had install it and see if there is something wrong with it. or how can i tell if it is the noise? you guys will probably think i am dumb but what are considered chain ring bolts...

Look at your cranks (those things your pedals are attached to ) on the drive-train-side. You see those bolts that are holding your chainring to your cranks? There you go.

oh...lolz my cranks are old school off an old BMX bike and it doesnt have those so i guess thats not it.

Do you get the knocking if you're grinding up a hill or only at high speed on the flats? Does the knocking stop if you coast at high speed? How's your chainline and chain tension?

Does the rear wheel spin freely by itself? I've overtightened the bearings before and it made a noise like you're describing. If you remove the rear wheel and spin the axle with your fingers you'll feel if it's loose/tight/just right.

Yes if I'm going up hills or pedaling really hard it makes the noise... It stops when coasting...And my chain is almost as tight as i can get it. Chain line lines up really well with the front. Should i loosen the chain up or keep it tight?

it spins alright but makes the noise when i took off the wheel and spun it???? bearing problem?

loosen up your chain a bit (1/2inch movement in it is good), then check your bottom bracket . loosening up the chain should fix the noise

Sounds like it. You've spun the wheel without engaging the cog, so that takes the freewheel out of the equation, loaded or unloaded. What's puzzling is why it would stop if you're coasting unless you just can't hear it over your freehub. If it's the bearings they should act up whenever it's spinning.

What kind of hub and, although you said you repacked the hub, did you check the bearings and race surfaces on the hub and cones (assuming you're using cup and cone)? I have a Suzue Junior I've kept on the road way too long and it's a nightmare for this kind of spontaneous noise stuff.

This might sound weird but i had a similar problem and i kept thinking it was something with my BB or Cranks.

Try tightening the Bolt that keeps your seatpost in place. Mine was tight enough that it didn't move when i sat on it...but i tightened it more and the noise seem to go away for the most part.

I can't remember the reason for it. But i know i had a similar problem to this and i thought it was my BB for the longest time.

Loosen that chain!! Even if that doesn't fix your problem you don't need to run it that tight. Pull your pedals, clean and regrease the threads and put 'em back on - TIGHT. That usually does it for me.
