Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bike shops could do the same if it wasn't for the average mentality of "new"-crazed consumers - (a credit card and a license should be sufficient). Unfortunately, and this is certainly true in the US, people have been conditioned to think an object that is barely used is of nearly 30-50% less value than its right-off-the-production-line counterpart. People are afforded the luxury of having OCD-like traits about scratches and dirt. In places where appearance trumps functionality, you'll always find colder shoulders.
Nice off-topic ramble.

Actually, it was both nice and on-topic.

I have had two bike shops in the Bay Area, one in Alameda, one in Oakland, that let me borrow high end bikes for an entire weekend. One was a Serotta HSG, the other was a Waterford SR-33. Of course, I was known in both shops, and ride on a well known local team.

Two year ago I went into one of the lbss near me to ask some questions about bike trainers. It was the local shop I go into much less frequently. I chatted with the guy for about 10 minutes, at which time he asked if Id like to take one home and try it for a few days. Only asked me to leave my name and phone number, which I did. Unfortunately, I should admit that I did not end up buying a trainer from them (it was like $50 more than buying online) but I for sure sent more of my business there afterwards.
