Well my performance pedal straps are about to break through and I'm looking into new straps. Toshi Doubles are a bit out of my price range. I was thinking about these:

I've only heard bad things about Dimensions. MKS doubles are great, and are a little less expensive than Toshis.

You could also just make doubleizers. Just 4 slits cut into 4 squares of leather.

soma doubles are single layer (as opposed to double layer with a laminate inside) so they are more prone to breaking and stretching. The buckle design is also not as secure.

If you're running brakeless, your toestraps ARE your brakes, so do it right. I recommend the high quality toshi or MKS singles if you are cash strapped. double layer is key.

i had dimension single straps that started showing wear after a few days, a few weeks later they rip. im real fond of nylon straps, and at the moment im running those laminated nylon straps from pake. so far so goooooooood.

honestly, my toshi's were an investment as far as i'm concerned. i went through countless nylon singles, a couple crappy leather singles, and i've had my toshi's for longer than it took me to snap all of those. save the extra money and buy the fujitoshis, you'll like them.

Those Dimensions are probably exactly the same as Somas. I've been running Soma doubles couple of months now in my two bikes and while they've been fine, I can def see them not lasting very long anymore, they're stretching and starting to look pretty worn.

On the other hand, I just got a pair used Errebi Double Sprints with a pair of RX-1 pedals I scored from teh 'bay and they look & feel so much better, double layer, thicker and sturdier.

Basically, I wouldn't buy cheap Somas (or Dimensions) anymore but instead fork out the money for something better quality and longer lasting.

i realize that the thought of dropping a bill on straps is kind of a stretch..

but think of what will happen if the strap breaks/shears when you're stopping/skidding. You fall the **** over and probably wreck your pearly whites, or face. Soma and dimension straps have been known to do that.

buy Toshi straps. I've had my current pair for a year, they show no problems, and for being ridden in every day, haven't stretched.

It's worth the $$$

i've been riding brakeless on my toshi singles for like 2 years now and they are still rockin. NJS straps are the only straps i've never heard of breaking.

i got toshi doubles in the spring and can safely say that they're one of the best investments i've made on my bike. let's face it: you ride fixed gear and rely on your feet to stop. how could you not splurge on foot retention if you can afford to?

Just broke my performance straps today and almost broke my face as well. I'm ordering new straps tonight. The MKS singles look good and are a lot less than the Toshi Doubles. Has anyone tried doubling up on MKS singles? Still less than half the price of Toshi Doubles.

only doubles i have ridden were some $30 cheapo doubles(i think cristophe) and the mks fit alpha sport doubles (the beefy laminated suede ones), which were really expensive, but worth it imo.

the difference is huge. the cristophe's slipped fairly easy, and just felt less than secure. i still ride the mks on both of my fixed bikes, and i must say they are infinitely better.. more secure and comfortable.

QUESTION..do the toshi's slip from the clasp? I've been riding nylon straps and they have not broke but i have to tighten them about 20 times a day. Thinking about getting toshi's as well.

I have toshi's on both of my bikes and I really like them and don't see myself using anything else anytime soon (especially not to single straps). I love the snugness without being overly tight feeling of the doubles.

I think that is a general problem with nylon straps, nylon is much more slippery as a material than leather or suede and the buckles on your cheap nylon straps are probably pretty crappy too. I experienced this myself, and won't be using nylon straps anymore, period.
