Is the Schwinn Madison Fully Chromed?

I'm wondering if the Schwinn Madison(new or past models) is fully Chromed under the paint. Besides the 2007 Madison, I'm not digging the paint scheme, but I think it would look really cool if I stripped the paint off one and had it completely chrome.

Does anyone know or has anyone done it and have pictures?

yes, i'm pretty sure that it is fully chromed, at least i know the fork is.

Yep, the frame is fully chromed. I'm watching the paint melt off of mine at this very moment. After searching for all the info on how to properly strip a chromed frame, I finally took the plunge. I'll be posting about the process for others who are interested.

You can't just use airplane stripper?

This was the bike that got me thinking about it.

You don't need to. Chrome doesn't rust.

Whoa. I happen to like the Madison paint job but that is from another world. A lot of paint is going to come off a lot of Madisons if this gets out.

You need to clearcoat it dood, all the old chrome bikes were clear-coated because chrome will tarnish and eventually rust.

bboysubhuman 11-17-08 06:55 PM

Chrome has no iron. So how can it rust?

I'm torn on the decision to clearcoat or not. If you browse the classic and vintage forum, you'll read conflicting reports on what to do with chrome. While all are in agreement that chrome needs to be protected, many folk say that an occasional waxing will be enough. Some people have had their frames clearcoated, but most of these guys needed this done by a professional due to chrome's reluctance to hold onto paint/clearcoat.

I have zero experience with either, so if anyone knows the pros/cons of wax vs. clearcoat, I'd love to hear it.

And that is what rusts.
