Why isnt there a fixie scene in dallas?

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I'm going to visit the fam in Dallas for Thanksgiving and planning on picking up a bike to convert while I'm there. Riding in Dallas is scary though, no one driving a car sees cyclists and if they do, they typically have annoyed responses.

Also, I've noticed recently that a few ebay track-frame vendors are based out of Dallas. I would try to contact them to see about a fixed scene.

I haven't been to Dallas in about 8 years, but I remember it just being so spread out. I couldn't imagine trying to meet up with the other people in town if they weren't in your area.

Riding in Dallas is what you make of it.. I live in the mid cities area and regularly ride in downtown Dallas.. There is very little traffic and some great areas to explore

Last weekend, I took the train from North Richland Hills to downtown and I spent 3 hrs riding around downtown and surrounding areas..

Sadly I see very few other riders downtown....I see a lot more riders in downtown Fort Worth

What exactly is a scene?
Is it more than a gathering, yet less than a movement?

Try Oak Cliff, across the bridge from Downtown. Exposition Park, by the State Fair and East Dallas. Check with some of the bike shops in town. Plenty of folks around riding fixed/ss.

You have no idea how people LOOOVE their cars in dallas. I saw gas today at $1.79/Gallon and not a single bike on the roads. If any place will be last to implement cycling infrastructure of any kind I'm sure it will be Dallas.

It may be Houston before Dallas.

Dallas has Rails to Trails and White Rock Lake, at least.

I feel you with the whole no fixed gear scene where you live. I saw ONE other person riding a fixed gear in Shillington, PA. Needless to say, he is a friend of mine. Besides him, no one rides a fixed gear. I feel lucky if I see a mountain biker or two (at most) on a beautiful day.

a couple of us ride downtown dallas on the weekends most of the time on mtn bikes. It's just much more versatile than road and fixies because of the crappy roads there!

When riding dallas the bigger bike you can be on the better. I know exactly what you mean about the roads there, for such a big city you would think they would spend some money on the roads instead of building more uppity rich ******-bag loft high rises.

Because everything in dallas is too spread out, and people dont watch for cyclists, and there are no bike lanes.

But there are plenty of fixed gear riders here.
