I saw this photo at the end of Rapha's spring/summer Kemmelburg issue and was pretty taken with how sartorially sensible this dude on the left is while still wearing functional performance oriented clothing. In particular I'd really like to know what shoes these are, I've never seen a pair of clipless shoes that aren't gaudy and covered with logos and shiny crap.

Tough to tell from that photo. That logo on the side looks similar to some offerings by Adidas, but hell if I know which model.

they look like specialized mountain shoes to me. if you look close there is a dark grey pattern on the side and an "s" logo on the back. they're probably these:

Knowing Rapha they're most likely Lake 330s. They have a black, and orange pair that look exactly like the ones in the pic.

My adidas road shoes are very plain... but nothing I'd want to walk around in for very long. Those Minrett shoes are what I REALLY want for commuting... but I was too slow, and can't find them in my size anymore.

How underwhelming, I guess my wishful thinking combines with opportune camerawork made me think they were something they're not.
I was really hoping that there was some fantastic maker of classy looking cycling shoes that only well dressed Europeans knew of.

As I was wearing them, I can confirm these are the 2007 Specialized S-Works.

However, Rapha are working on their own shoes. I guess you (and I)'ll have to wait for that euro-shoe classiness.

An olive sweater with pink socks and a blue shirt? I guess you have a different definition of "sensible" than I do... Also, after any kind of ride that man would be hell of wet under the arms. Just sayin'...

Anyway, I wear these everywhere I go. They don't look ridiculous, they're stiff enough for a ride but comfy enough for walking, and if they get shredded, who cares? They were like $30 from Nashbar on sale. If you do buy them, be warned that they run a little small but they stretch and break in nicely after they get soaking wet a few times, because they're leather instead of plastic. But don't tell my vegan friends...

If you really want a pair of normal looking clipless pedals, buy yourself a pair of your favorite shoes, some 3/8 inch steel plate and a set of these

Remove the insole, tear out about 3/8th of an inch of the stuff in the bottom of your shoe, cut the steel to shape, and glue in with rubber cement. Insole goes back in on top

I mounted my cleat plate with one of the sets of holes, while the other holds the cleat. I now have a pair of perfectly walkable clipless converse all-stars.

The cleat is only half of the reason to wear cycling shoes... the soles are a lot stiffer than normal shoes which prevents your foot from bending around the pedal and will stand up to repeated stress in every direction (up, down, forward, backward). For that matter, I think just the torquing stress alone from clipping in/out of SPD pedals would destroy a normal sneaker sole pretty ****ing quick. On top of that, converse all-star's have some of the floppiest, bendiest, twistiest soles around as far as sneakers are concerned (and no arch support either). Not trying to hate on your ingenuity here, but I'm guessing that before long you're going to have some perfectly walkable converse all-stars with big ****ing holes in the sole. OP, might wanna keep this in mind before you go carving up your new Pumas

Now, with that said, I have always wanted to bolt some cleats to the bottom of a pair of wingtips. Who knows, I still may...
