SE Lager, to upgrade or not

I have a stock SE lager from two years ago. I do like the bike but would really like to upgrade almost everything. Even getting more of the lower end upgrade parts, I'm looking at around at least $600. Is it worth it to upgrade this bike or would I be better off selling it and getting a new, possibly higher quality single/fixed?

I appreciate any advice, and as you can tell, I'm new to the customness of the simplest form of two wheeling.

UPDATE BELOW, PLEASE READ THAT NOT THIS. Thank you

I have an 08 SE Lager, I as well like the bike. These are the upgrades I did.

MKS gr-9 pedals
Thomson seatpost ($30 on ebay, brand new)
San Marco regal saddle (even though I found the stock seat to be quite comfortable and cool looking)
New stem
Nitto drops
New tires (the stock tires were pathetic)

That is the extend I will do for upgrading, I don't mind the cranks actually. I am looking to get a new bike as well in the spring so I don't want to put anymore money into the lager. I am not going to sell my Lager though so it will be my "beater" as people on here say, I hate that term, anyways....

So if you really are going to spend $600 I would just put that money to a new bike. I am looking to get an Alien.

UPDATE UPDATE

Finacials have changed. Been living in Breck so I haven't been riding it but come spring and the end of the season I'll be pedaling again. So now I don't have the $600 I was hoping for to make upgrades. I've got around $250-$300. Since this isn't enough to get a new bike worth buying, what should I change on the Lager. I want a different ratio so a new freewheel is a must and I have to change the tires, they are not so great.

So on top of tires and a freewheel, what should I change with the money I have?

If it ain't broke wait until you've got more money.

I ride the same frame with a very different set of components. The frame is heavy, but solid. A new wheelset would be nice, but I wouldn't do it unless you can put at least $250 into them.

Honestly, I would replace something that would dramatically change the way the thing feels or looks, but that wouldn't cost that much. Keep the cash and save for a frame or wheelset. Get some crazy handle bars or something that will keep the bike fun and exciting to ride while you wait.

Basically I want to spend the least amount of money but make it ride better. My thoughts were that upgrading the drivetrain and tires would be the most effective way of doing this. Are the cranks worth enough to leave them alone? I was also planning on new pedals, clips, and staps. The other thing is some of the upgades I like to be able to carry over to my next bike, why i like the idea of pedals and such.

Pedals would be a good spot. Would only replace the tires if you are switching from 28 to 25 or 23. Otherwise spend elsewhere for now.
