So I'm finally upgrading from my stock crankset to something a little nicer.

Not trying to break the bank but I found a $100 set of Mid 80's campy cranks on Craigslist.

Any thoughts on whether it's better to go with these or a brand new set of Sugino Messenger cranks.

Read all the threads about Sugino messenger cranks, there's a ton, so you will know ALL about 42mm and 45mm chain line and chain ring on inside and outside of the spider. If you care about straight chain line.

I had a vintage road double Campy crank and it worked great. Used the small chain ring with some stock Pista Alex wheels. Also nice was the Campy BB. Not the sealed cartridge type but vintage. It was smooooth.

I got new shorter chain ring bolts so the 1 chain ring would tighten up properly.

The Sugino Messenger is a road double with the chain ring on the outside for cosmetic correctness makes it 45mm.

on a 107. if you put it on a 103 the outside is 42.

Depends on the bike you're gonna put them on, sometimes vintage only looks good on vintage bikes IMO. Personally I would go with the Messenger cranks, I very seldom trust drivetrain purchases on CL unless they're listed as new.

Thanks for the correct info. Someday I might get the 103mm BB and make it right. Maybe when I need a new chain ring and BB. Until then, it'll run where it is.

It's 45mm with matching 103 bb. If you go this route, check out Sheldon Brown to see cog/hub configuration will give something close to a 45mm chainline in the rear. Or get a 107 bb and put the chainring on the inside of the spider to get a 42mm (or something close enough) chainline.

The above is absolutely correct. A 107 with the chainring on the inside gives a damn near 42mm chainline. I think it's within 1mm of it. I know this, because I have actually done it. I believe I can get it 42mm bang-on if I consult Sheldown Brown's Article about chainlines and get the right cog.

Or perhaps a 108, or 109, would work. I've been staring at my chainline ever since I switched to a 107, with the chainring on the inside, and it appears to be off 1mm. LBS used a tool that measures chainline to confirm it's straightness, but when looking closely by eye, it looks off...

My bicycle is almost all Campy components but I have Sugino cranks. I highly recommend Sugino cranks. They've been by far the best I have ridden. You'll be well off with either decision, because Campy parts (especially vintage) are never bad but if you're going for function, go for Sugino.

So I got the messengers this week and now I understand all of this chainline nonsense.
My bottom bracket is a conversion and I think its around 110.
The chainring is on the inside.

I have noticed a slight difference in the riding which seems like it could have something to do with the chainline.

Would I need to get a 107 or 103 BB to get that "perfect" chainline?

chainring on the inside is pretty annoying, imo. and the messenger and RD both have a 45mm chainline with a 103mm BB.. pretty lame
