Park CT-7: Hot/Not Hot?
https://www.parktool.com/products/det...at=5&item=CT-7
I'm taking some links off of a new chain for my new build when my tool breaks.
It's the same chain tool i've had since i got my first BMX toolset years ago (my first ever, actually). Kinda bummed.
Anyway, i'm realizing my 3/32" tool isn't going to work without damaging the links.
I'm planning to call around Philly's shops to see what my options are. I'm leaning towards the Park Tools CT-7 as it's 1) Parks and 2) probably easy to come by.
Before i do, though, does anyone have experience with something they think is better? 1/8" obviously. I'm also looking to spend under $40.
Tia.

I used to use that and its 3/32" counterpart all the time at Bike Church. The tool is fine but if you don't know what you're doing, the pins will get bent and/or break.

Whooop. Reading comprehension.
What sort of chain is it that a CT 3 would damage the link? If it's a halflink chain throw it away because they're crap.

mechanically sound
The baddest ass chain tool I've used was given to the shop by an old timer. It looked like a long-handled pair of pliers, with a nub for starting the pin and a longer "tooth" for pushing the pin further. No markings on it.

I just searched...that Topeak Droid is only like $30. So within the OP's price range...it looks pretty sweet too.
that park tool one is good too, i mean...it's a chainbreaker...it has one purpose.

you shouldnt have any problem using a standard chain breaker. the one you linked is specifically designed for 3/16" bmx chain. it just happens to, like a standard chain tool, also work on 1/8" chains.

I know you don't want to hear this, but I have tried a number of chain tools, expensive and not, and I stick confidently to my wal-mart special which I have had for years. the teeth that hold the chain broke off, but it works like a dream for me. I even threw on my winter 1/8 with it just fine. Still on the same pin too. $4.96 just saying.

CT-5 has been all I've needed...Works great with 3/32" as well as 1/8" chains...
The original pin is still holding strong after more than a decade of use...

in what way are these other two chain tools not working on track chain?
