I saw this on Craigslist awhile back...I am always curious about the details of the loss.
How was it locked up, to what, which lock, how was lock defeated, etc...
Unfortunately, if it wasn't secured properly, you know the saying....

I don't know. Unless this was stolen out of dudes apartment, I don't really know how much you can blame the lock. You just can't leave a bike like that locked up out of site in New York. Dude who stole it probably saw it, hailed a cab to the closest hardware store, bought the biggest saw he could afford, cabbed it back, took that ****, sold it, and still made out like bandit.

This is the common narrative you hear people say, but I've still yet to hear anyone who had a high quality krypto or otherwise top end lock (like a Bulldog or whatever) give a first hand account of their bike getting stolen this way. Yes absolutely you can defeat any lock but the top quality locks require such drastic measures as angle grinders to overcome them and I seriously doubt there are as many thieves roaming the streets with jackhammers and plasma cutting torches as the stories seem to suggest.

And it's true: I've never actually heard a first-hand account of a krypto or bulldog chain being cut. Has anyone else? It'd be a relief to me if this really never happened (or happened extremely rarely).

I'm sure it happens, I don't think it happens that often though. I've seen a good amount of high end bikes completely stripped with just the bare frame left locked up with a NYC chain or something but I still haven't heard of someone having a top quality lock defeated when locked up on the street. I can think of one particular bike nicer than the one in this thread that was locked with a new york chain in a really bad area for bike thefts for like a week. All the top end campy stuff, expensive saddle, wheels and even the headset was stripped from it, but the frame itself stayed there for quite a while. I'd think that kind of experience is alot more common than having the lock cut with massive power tools

It'd be easy as hell to get a chain over the top of a sign post. It's a chain...

Not discounting the possibility that it was cut, but there are several easier ways to get a bike off a sign post than cutting through the lock.

Not if you lock that chain tightly.
I never lock up from end of the chain to the end of the chain.
I lock from end of chain to some where in the middle of the chain, as tightly as can get it.

Now if you take the sign off, that's another story.

true, but I reckon if the chain were cut it would have been left at the scene. The fact that he can't figure out how the bike got taken probably means the chain is still attached to it.

And regardless, looking your bike to a sign is a terrible bad idea

Yeah, I'm also going to count the fact that when he states flatly, "I was pretty drunk" he might be subtly hinting that he ****ed up the lock job. Riding drunk has many consequences.

cash reward hey? what's stopping the thief from just babysitting the bike for a few weeks until a reward is advertised, then "finding it" and returning it for the reward?
