Chain and freewheel importance

SO im trying to learn about everything one step at a time. I have a couple rather important questions I think. I have a cheap KMC bmx chain on my SS/FG. It is a 3/32. I have a Shimano 16t freewheel on my bike now. How important are these 2 things? Do I really need an expensive, high-end chain and freewheel for basic around town commuting or 5 mile rides here and their? Any advice (and I am sure there is going to be plenty lol) would be very much appreciated. I am on SB right now, trying to learn about things!

Thanks all,
Free

you are going to get a lot of people on that one. I run full 1/8. It works.

search for responses on 1/8 vs. 3/32.

I rode 3/32 for 3 years until I threw a 1/8 KMC Z chain on for winter and I LOVE it. It is the smoothest, quietest drive train I have ever had. $10 3/32 cog + old take off 3/32 road chain ring= working nicely for me. I may keep it past winter.

Your setup is fine, but drivetrain parts wear naturally, so don't expect these parts to last forever. Shimano freewheels are among the best. KMC makes many grades of chain. You probably have a relatively low grade chain, which is OK, but it may wear faster than better chains. When you replace your chain, look for a KMC Z610HX...its a little more expensive than the cheapest chain (but still cheap), but is stronger and will last longer.

Read www.sheldonbrown.com to understand when and why you should replace your chain.

Good luck!
