Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Me and my dad did some work on my schwinn i'm going to use for snow. countless troubles! first, schwinn decided to make the inside diameter of their 1" threaded forks slightly less than one inch. new fork, $25 problem solved. tried to find a seat post that's one piece and not the cheap pinch bolt type set up on many old bikes. negative.

then we went to put the front brake on. the bolt in the brake is for modern recessed forks. the fork was of course a 27" fork. he figured out a way to do it front brake solved. go to mount the front wheel. turns out the fork is out of whack. by the grace of god, my dad had the tools needed and got it decent. we're going to give it another shot and should be good to go.

and the 38 18 is going to be fun. especially over 15 mph.

that's what happens with old bikes. i converted an old murray last summer and the fork spacing was only 92mm when i wanted to put in a 100mm. and when i was gonna convert the american bottom bracket to a european one, the welding inside was so poor i can't fit the conversion kit in it. problems problems problems.

that why i'd go for new frames, saves you some trouble AND you'll have someone to yell at if you run into one.

you spent $25 on a 27" fork without a recessed brake mount that isn't even straight? you got ripped off. i've bought nice carbon threadless forks for $30. they were used, but still... i wouldn't pay more than $10 for any old janky 27" fork, most no more than $5.

oh, and while schwinn "decided" to make the inside diameter of their fork less than 1" so did pretty much every other low-end brand of the time. almost all BMX and any bike with one-piece cranks for many many years used .833" inside diameter forks/stems. it's not like they were using some crazy weird system, it was the standard. and that 21.15mm seatpost, that was the standard too.

welcome to the world of trying to upgrade the obsolete
