I started listening ever since I got a refurbed iPod not too long ago.

Sometimes I'll use the behind the neck earphones but my Apple earbuds are great for going under my bavaclava. I feel comfortable riding and listening to music, as I can still hear most of the cars around me and whatnot.

I used to shove shure e2c buds in my ears (prefer foam), but I'd rather be able to hear the world when riding.

Apple earbuds (on medium volume so you can still hear cars) under the balaclava ftw!

Yes....the buzz of my tires and the whir of the chain. The ratcheting of my freehub. The wind whistling in my ears. The pace of my breathing. There a whole symphony there if you just listen.

I had them too and it was riding in complete silence! Super scary. like semi's coulda honked 2 inches from me and I wouldn't have heard it. also not good for sirens which I think are one variable that even a great rider can't always account for as far as running lights and such. Now I ride sometimes with some cheapie buds but low volume and half in my ear.

I use in-ear Skull Candy earphones. They are cheap and don't fall out of my ears (particularly when riding fast or against wind) like the ones that come with iPhones do (Haha ... I almost said "stock" ... bike parts are still on the mind ...). The bad thing is that I can't answer calls with them coz they lack a mic.

Incidentally, if you like bright anodized colors, the Skull Candy earphones kind of match the colors you normally see anodized on a bike ... ?

I bought my e2c's because I used to commute on the train (it was too long, and too under water to ride my bike) and they worked well at keeping the train noises out. They also kinda sucked in terms of sound quality.

When I moved, i realized I had to abandon my old commuting habits, like listening to music (and reading books) because they distracted me enough that I could get into trouble. Even with different ear buds, and a more open design the music is still a distraction that I should live without.

Of course, I still , on occasion, ride with my new sony ex55s, which cost a quarter of my e2cs, sound twice as good, and seal 90% as well.

same here... plus i just use the right earbud, leaving the left ear open to hear cars better.

sometimes... i used to use some etymotic er-6i, but i'm going to try out some koss portapros. they're open-air so you can hear your surroundings, though i'm not sure how it will fair when you're out in noisy traffic.

I do if I'm riding bike paths or sidewalks. If I'm on roads, I either leave one bud out so I can still get some sound from my surroundings or I forgo the music altogether.

I have Sony Fontopia earbuds. Good sound, and they do a good job blocking out outside noise, which is great for listening, but not for keeping an ear out for your surroundings. I'd be too scared to ride with both in.

Cheap-o Phillips clip behind ear phones. Cheap ass in ear ipod buds are sucky back ups. Work great even when you get sweaty. Running with an iPhone but I decline to answer the phone when it comes in over the tunes. Music is enough....

Regular iPod headphones. Only one or none in traffic, but if it's pretty dead, I will have both in. Sight will always be a more reliable sense than hearing.

These are the ones I was talking about, got em at best buy for $15 and they're about a year old and have survived many training miles.

And they work just fine with a road helmet and sunglasses.

I don't wear headphones while riding. I think it's too dangerous to not have your ears at the ready when riding in the city.

when my iPod isn't dead i rock it. i use some really old (like 5 0r 6 years old) Koss ear buds. i got them in college for like $30, and they still work great. they are pretty damn compfy, and well broken in so i never tossed them. some times i only wear one bud, depending on where i am riding. but if you keep the volume down you can still hear a lot.

It's really really loud.

Earbuds are pretty bad especially in high traffic, or also the helmet rubbing against them and knocking them out.

rarely, I like to be fully aware of cars when I'm on the road. When I'm on a bike path, sometimes a pair of the sony studio ones around neck at full volume.

Before I lost my headphones/ipod, I'd listen to music a lot cruising around brooklyn, across bridges, or in manhattan riverside, but not in the thick of the city.

If I were rich...

This may vary from state to state, but I'm pretty sure that here in NY, it's illegal to ride a bicycle with headphones in/on both ears. Of course, it's also illegal to run a red light, but that never stopped anyone.

I rock the Skullcandy Ink'd phones, but not while riding.

Do you think it's worth the money. I want to get one, but can never find one in stock to look at.

Bose, Nano (16g).

I want to try noise canceling headphones now, just to collect goats in my backyard.

Due to the overwhelming number of people who can't follow directions, I seriously fear for my children's future.
