Hey guys-

so I just got this track frame set up with new parts recently. I'm running 1/8th chain with the proper chainring, and cog...my alignment is correct, and my chain is new. (izumi gold)...my hubs are also new...they're sealed cartridge bearing IRO track hubs.

I was just out riding and I noticed this weird noise...I think it's the chain...last night I thought it was the rear hub...but after my ride tonight I flipped the bike over and rotated the cranks by hand and put my ear to the bike...I relaized too late that I put it too close and felt the searing pain of my ear being ripped off by the chain, followed by torrents of blood splattering the wall.




just kidding.



but seriously, when I tried to listen, it sounded like the hub, then the bottom bracket "area" and then the chain...if that makes any sense?

my chain tension seems fine to me...I set it like I've set any other fixie I've ever ridden.

could it just be the fact that all the parts are new? the only things that aren't new on the drive train are the bb and the cranks....the chain, chainring and the entire rear wheel are brand spanking new. I've never had new hubs or chainring/cogs in my life...just new chains...is it supposed to sound like a slight "popping and pinging"? (I know on fixed conversions it can sound like that....this is kinda like that but not as loud) I figure it has to be the chain, if I can hear it from the bb/crank area and in the rear hub area.

any help or advice is appreciated.

Yes tis possible. Unlikely that it is bb, crank, chain, and huball at the same time, could be but not likely. However seeing as how you can hear it all the way around it sounds lke the chain. By the way get that ear looked at before typing.

Being that the chain is new, clean all of the factory grease off, and then lube it with something else, whatever you norammly use. If this does not work take the chain off and spin your cranks, pedals, and wheel to find out where it is coming from. Process of elimination.

I had one of these weird noises and it turned out to be the Aluminum chain ring bolts. I solved the problem with grease on the bolts and then re-installation. Noise solved. Also check and lube the b/b mounting threads and reinstall.

Is the noise there throughout the pedaling cycle or just at one spot?

I generally get this noise if my chain line is off or the stack bolts are loose. I did have a hub seize up on me, but it was a factory defect and only made the noise in a small part of the pedalling cycle. How old is your cog/chainring? If it's significantly worn, it may be that your new chain just isn't synching well until it breaks in a bit...
