Customer lost a LBS
There's a customer who often comes by the shop that I work at every once in a while. He probably thinks that he contributes a lot to the shop and that we depend on his business, as he tells me through his cocky, unappreciative attitude.
Anyways, The other day this chump comes in and tries to get us to waste our time with him and essentially use us in order to further the profits of another company that has no ties to his community, let alone city, state, country, or continent. He was surprised.
I told the guy that it was pretty lame that he wanted to use a local business that gets by on slim margins that way, especially in the current economy, and that we might not exist in the future to help people out with service if we weren't able to sell enough bikes to pay our bills. I explained how online sales were hurting the domestic bicycle industry. I then told him that we could do a $60 professional fit for him. He seemed very surprised, and even angry.
He told me that he was going to be "reporting this situation to his online friends."
I replied with something along the lines of, "OK."
The guy could not understand why our company didn't want to encourage his purchase of a mail-order product. I told him that I would hope the company you are buying a product from is knowledgeable enough about the product to help him choose a size.
Long story short, sometimes people are not respectful of people and demand that you give them free service. It actually happens all the time and I give them the same story every time. With a ****ty attitude about your community, its a wonder that there are any local businesses that can stay in business.
Anyone else encounter jerks like this on a daily basis? It's pretty common for me, so it wasn't really a big deal.

the interesting thing is that i do give discounts to ppl who frequent and support our shop, but they tend to not expect anything in return. its the guy who buys two tubes and a $20 tune up who wants stock options in compensation for his patronage!

^ We do the same thing. Attitude and obviously patronage do have some hidden perks in the bike shop world.

Not as good as the parody of the parody of the parody of the original thread but I still give you a 6/10 for effort.
