I'm looking to buy a new headset for my fixie. The one on the bike is a piece of junk and has a lot of play in it. I am trying to decide between the Hope or the Chris King headset. I'm trying to find out if one is superior over the other or if it is just preference and they both are fabulous headsets.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

They are both ripoffs. A headset is bearings that turn your fork/handlebars. Why pay $100+ for it, unless you want to be a hipster ******-bag.

I think they'll both last forever. With headseats, thats about all you can hope for, right?
Either one will be all that you could ever need. Sorry, I don't have any specifics about either of them, but I don't think I would invest in one...except for maybe on my MTB where my parts get beaten to hell a whole lot more.

find a Cane Creek S3 or S6 on sale.

+1, if money is a factor. otherwise get whichever one you think looks better. quality is basically the same.

It sounds crazy, but it is actually possible to adjust a headset that has play in it. You don't always have to buy a new one. The adjustment can take the play away. I went through so many high end headsets before I figured this out.

Chris King is made in Portland by a green and employee friendly company. Hope is UK based and also highly regarded - not necessarily for being green but for putting out a good product. Both are really similar design. 31mm stack height on the CK and 28mm on the 08 Hope.

So, you joined the same day you posted. That's interesting.

Now, to the question at hand. The King is a great headset and lasts forever. You can always take it off the bike when you sell it. Ebay prices for used are almost what a new costs. So, somebody thinks very highly about them. When resale is almost retail there's a good reason for that. I can't say about the Hope. My choice is the King. Good luck

a less inexpensive but comparable headset to the Chis King or Hope would be the IRD-Tange technoglide.

No idea on the Hope headsets, but their hubs are quality bits.

King headsets do not have a tapered compression ring (Cane Creek/Aheadset patented, AFAIK) which makes the headset easier to get the preload on the bearings correct and it most certainly will hold the preload better than the rubber ring in the King system. The Hope headset does license the tapered compression ring for use in their headsets, so I'd give the nod to Hope on that matter.

I have a King on my fixie, and I love it, but it is harder to get the preload dialed in compared to the Cane Creek S-3 that it replaced :-\.



The next headset I buy will either be the Hope or the Cane Creek 110, just because of the tapered compression ring design.
