What gives? These seem fairly new, but CST makes MTN bike tires usually, correct?

Anyone used/seen these in person? they are fairly cheap, and come in colors that everyone loves. Just from looking at them, they look pretty cheap and don't like all that durable.

No-one will argue they are made solely for performance- but CST is just Chen Shin/Shing Tire corp from China. They make tires for all bicycles & motorcycles, etc. These do seem decent enough- we haven't had anyone complain but maybe they haven't skidded enough on them?

I'd pass.

All of the engineering that goes into the bike plus your weight all meets the pavement at two small patches...where the rubber meets the road.

Skimp on a saddle, headset, bar tape...but don't skimp on a the chain, crankset, rear hub, or tires. If any of the latter fail you might fall.

Good tires cost $50 for a reason. There's a lot of engineering that goes into them.

i've used the gum wall version of these just because i had them laying around the shop: they dry out and crack extremely quick; they feel like **** to ride on; fashion over function....and other horrible things.

Looking at the photo I know they ride like garbage. And to the poster who said you can skimp out on a saddle, absolute nonsense. Its NEVER smart to skimp out on a saddle, when you have much pressure on a sensitive area you want to be comfortable or else you may fail later in life when you want kids or many other bad things.

I agree. My point was to not skimp on safety features. If one had to cut corners, cut corners in the aforementioned areas before cutting corners on the drive train.

In a perfect world we'd have a team of scientists building our bikes for us like Lance did.

how do you make a 700x23 clincher 400g? that seems ridiculously heavy.

That's because it is. My cross tires weigh 320g apiece, and they're 35c.

true, if you are riding brakeless you definitely need a solid setup, especially chain.

Well seeing that the majority of the posts I just read, none of the people seemed to have any first hand experience with them.
Anyways, friend has a pair of the white ones and from riding his bike around they seem like great tires for only being 16$ at the LBS.
Haven't worn down much from skidding, haven't had any flats, only con I can think of is the weight

you obviously have not ridden a good set of tires. when you ride a good set of tires you too will realize those tires are for newbies that want colored tires.

Id consider Specialized Armadillos pretty good tires
And also....please never compare a 16$ tire to a good set of tires
I think it's quite obvious that people who are buying these are not expecting a tire comparable to a tire that costs say 40$
