What do you do with your helmet when you lock up

What do you do with your helmet when you lock up

When I lock up, I just leave the helmet dangling from a brake lever, out of sheer laziness. I don't even bother bending down and putting a helmet strap through my lock. I've been doing this out of habit for as long as I remember and I've never had anyone nick a helmet. Most likely because I doubt thieves will be like "OMG SWEET! NOW I CAN BE SAFE!"

I've left some pretty nice helmets dangling from the bars, too - Bell Sweep, Limar 969, Giro Monza... never had a problem.

What do you guys do when you lock up? Leave the helmet? Take it with you? Lock it through your lock? Ever had a helmet stolen?

Take it with me. Last thing I need is some dumbass teenagers ****ing with it solely because it's easily accessible.

When I'm shopping or running errands, I just keep my helmet on. When I get to work, my bike goes with me inside.

I have locked it up with the u-lock before, but I now take it with me - I just clip it to my shoulder/bag strap and leave it be - or just leave it on my head depending on what my errand/deal is.
At work, I park inside my office, so all my clothing stuff gets to stay by my desk while my bike waits by reception for days-end.

If I have lots of room in my bike, I put it in my bag.

If I don't I put a strap through the lock.

Sometimes I clip it to my bag, if I'm going to be doing something where that won't be annoying.

I lock it through the straps, unless it's raining, then I take it with me.

The fashionable thing to do is to leave it hanging on the bike.
But that may not be the practical thing to do.

I always figure, who the hell is going to steal a helmet? It's worked for me so far.

If I'm wearing a sling bag or back pack and I clip it to a shoulder strap.

I will lock it up if I am at the bar or somewhere where it is easily seen... I never leave it somewhere isolated/dark where a fratboy can piss on it.

Always used to lock it through a vent hole on the helmet. Too big and annoying to bother taking with me.

I'd think the thieves would see it unlocked and say: "OMG SWEET NOW I CAN SELL IT!" especially if it's a nice one.

helmets with cut straps have no re-sale value. If it's just sitting there then I wouldn't see why someone wouldn't take it. I always take mine with me. and clip it to my bag.

hole in helmet through the u-lock. if i took it with me id most likely loose it. this assumes i actually do wear my helmet, which i do about half the time. i need to wear it more, got lucky in an accident last year and flipped over the handlebars (downtube shifters, chainsuck/jam, throwing handlebars 90 degrees to direction of travel). i landed on my shoulder and skidded about 20 feet (i was moving at a pretty good clip). one scratch on the back of my head. I got lucky i fell to the left- my bike nailed a parked car after i was ejected. that could have been my head/neck.

**** that, take it in. i have had bike lights ripped off my bike just so they can be broken. i know this because i found one just down the block smashed (but i got the recharchable batteries back... the most expensive part)

edit: and i would hate to have my helmet smashed... i would prefer it to stay on my head and stop me dieing

I have a bad habit of always having my helmet on, and forgetting it's there. I'll be sitting down in a restaurant and realize it's still on my head.

I lock it up, but I painted it bright colours to ward off predators by making them think it's toxic.
