Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Just run cheapos for a few months, and then the novelty of skidding will wear off just a tad and you won't be tearing through your rear quite as much at this point... ideally. Resort to skipping, and use backward retention more than skidding and your options for tires will dramatically increase.

Or maybe just resist the rear wheel without skipping or skidding. Which offers the best braking anyways. Or run a brake.

Wow, I ride mine pretty hard, but that's just stupid (skidding that much). I'll have to try the Somas next.

everwears hands down. i ride about 20-30 miles a day brakeless.. which includes a lot of stopping and starting. (courier in century city)... 42/16 ratio ( 8 patches )... but that number is useless if you can skid w/ your cranks at multiple points in the revolution. hence, my rear wears down evenly... i keep my rear at 140psi at all times.. this is crucial... lower pressure, wears your tire down quicker...

*drumroll*
my rear lasts for a good 1 month of work.

Specialized Roubaix tires work very well. They have a really weird wear pattern, it just kinda melts.

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE USE ARMADILLO ALL CONDITIONS.
(they have this really weird habit of shredding on the surface, you get flat spots in your tire.)

****, you people skid too much. i had my rear everwear for 10 months. it is still on my old rear wheel. i bought a new wheel in october and a gatorskin to go with it, which i still have. use your legs to slow down, stop skidding, save money.

Fortezza race. I have them, I skid all over the place, and have been on these for a few months, and the grip strip in the middle has worn a bit, but not too bad. Plus, they're really good for cornering. They're like $30 or so on perf bikes.

lol funny to see this thread popped up agin (i posted this almost 2 months ago). I had worn out my first pair of tires that came with my (cheap) wheelset while learning to ride fixed gear (wence all the skiding). I was skidding to practice becoming an experienced rider on my first fixed gear. I have since put on front and rear brakes, and have been running the ss freewheel (riding the bike as a commuter thoughout the winter I have been running it ss mostly, while running fg it's annoying when you're late and rushing to work everyday). Also I have put on 28 gatorskins front and rear, and these are the perfect tires for city riding. At the time of my first post I had smoothed out 2 big spots on my rear tire and thought it was worn out (I din't realize that I should rotate it that much). Jesus, i'm drunk; let me know how stupid all this sounds, I'll get a good laough rereading this monday morning. ha
