Does everyone know the wonder of Scotch Brite?
 

It is some amazing stuff. I received some IRO hubs and used Scotch Brite to take the "IRO" off. How about polishing old, rusty components?....nothing better.

Even better than Scotch Brite is WD-40 and Scotch Brite as a tag team. It's amazing. Also used it on a lot of old XT components to remove decals and polish them back up. If you rub hard enough it gives it a brushed look. I used a combination of VERY fine, wet sand paper and then Scotch Brite on the cranks, rear derailleur and V brakes. Looks very good.

Just thought I'd share. Scotch Brite.

Even better is going to Home Depot and getting steel wool in whatever fineness you want and whatever liquid lubricant/fluid you want, for a lot cheaper than a box of Scotch Brite.

Just don't use it on chrome.

Scotch Brite?! You don't say! Were the hubs black or chrome? What about a painted logo on a black matte finish? Think it would work for that?

Yes, I do think that it would work, but I'd rather you not take my word for it because I've never used it for exactly that. The hubs were chrome with black paint.

Worked like a charm.....but don't rub too hard as you might work through the paint, and if chrome, through the chrome. I haven't looked closely at mine, but I may have discolored the chrome a bit. Not enough to bother me.

I think they're polished aluminum. Either way, steel wool is much safer. Use 000 or finer. You probably scratched the hell out of it but can't see it indoors. Look closely out in the sun.

Very likely. If so, I'll just treat the entire hub that way.

If that's the case, I would work your way up to finer grades until I was satisfied. I'm a bit of a perfectionist though. That's what happens when you run a detail shop for 10 years. I notice so many things that most people will never notice.

I just know that if I did happen to scratch the hub, it won't be a problem to make it look good. As long as it looks good to me, I'm happy.
