Bike shop translation
So the other day I was at the local bike shop getting some handlebar tape. I had my bike (trek 400 series) with me and had removed my front brake and the old tape. While in the store I was told multiple times that I needed to run a front brake. I understand this and would never ride without one. I tried to explain that I was going to repaint the bike and wrap the handlebars so that's why they saw no break. They continued to emphasize the importance of a front brake anyway. But anyway, they said that my frame wouldn't be able to stand being stopped by the pedals alone and that the back tire would "rip off". I don't really understand this. I figure the chain would break before my tire would go. Are they trying to tell me my frame isn't strong enough or what?

True story:
Before getting my Masi, I stopped by the small LBS in my hometown to do a bit of shopping around. I mentioned that among other things I was looking at buying a Kilo from BD. The sales guy told me I should buy locally, which is only right and it's what I ended up doing. However, as part of his argument, he claimed that buying bikes online is illegal.
Needless to say, I bought locally, but at a much better shop in Wilmington where I go to school and live most of the time anyway.

Yeah well My tire fell off because I was running without brakes on my Trek 500. Come to think of it I was riding without axle bolts too.

Definitely. If this catches on, pretty soon people will be downloading them from illegal host sites, and before you know it, you'll gank a ride with a virus (and then you'll never ride the same). At least find someone with a good original bike and have 'em burn you a copy.

buying stolen bikes online is illegal, as it is through any means of transaction, so maybe you misheard or he misspoke. more likely he was being inarticulate than he actually thinks what you said he thinks.
obviously if you buy a stolen bike thinking it's legit, that's not illegal, but you will lose the bike and have to sue the criminal to get your money back.
as for the tire they again were probably being inarticulate. the tire will rip to shreds and then come off because you'll skid so much.
if they really said it was because of your frame, then maybe they are as dumb as everyone's making them out to be.
for someone who can't spell brake you are pretty harsh on this shop that is probably just as bad at effective communication.

Or something like that, at that point I was too
to really take in everything he was telling me. I just thanked him for his advice, walked out and made a mental note to never, ever go back.

1) Jaco is the one who told the story about the guy saying that buying bikes online was illegal, and therefore the one whom I assume you are accusing of misspelling "brake" (though the word does not even appear in his post).
2) Soap is the OP, and the only one who has, up to this point in the thread, misspelled "brake."
These are two different people. In your desire to inflict some sort of social justice upon the damned dirty misspellers of the world, you have highly and mightily insulted the wrong person. Some suggestions:
1) Be thankful that you are as educated as you are.
2) Do not presume that an occasional misspelled word indicates moral bankruptcy or some sort of social subordination to you on the part of the misspeller.
3) Given the egg on your face, perhaps reconsider ever lecturing anybody about effective communication.

your error was thinking the first three sentences were connected with the last three.
they weren't. thus the extra carriage return.
that last quip was only aimed at the OP. i was responding to the legal issue in the first part, then separating it from the rest. which i think jaco understands because he only quoted the part that pertained to his remark.
