Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I got the rims because I liked that Tzu has reached out to the biking community, asked for input and generally been a nice guy at that other site. I also bought the stuff when I still had my Cannondale track and wasn't going to let good parts go to waste.

To make you happy here it is with Mack lf ceramic bearing hubs laced to Araya tubulars w/ Tufo tires (soon to be Conti Sprinters). I also have a set of Superbe laced to Araya tubulars and will most likely go FMBs on that wheelset.

My 1977 Gitane Gypsy Sport fixed gear conversion is finished (again). I posted pictures of it back in May the first time it was "finished," but the only parts left from that incarnation are the saddle, the brake calipers and the brake levers. I think the next time it's "finished" I'll have replaced the frame, so this could be the last time it's "finished" as a Gitane.

And of course, the obligatory chainline shot:

Current state:

Lugged steel ("tubes legers") frame with theft-resistant paint
Salsa Poco handlebars
Nitto Technomic stem (yes, I know it looks like a giraffe)
Ritchey Logic headset
Tektro R200A brake levers
WTB Rocket V saddle
Kalloy Uno seat post
"Vintage" Dia Compe brakes with Jagwire Basics pads (blue to match the bike)
Origin-8 Pro-Pulsion crank with 46T chainring
Origin-8 Pro-Pulsion 103mm bottom bracket
Surly 18T fixed cog
Shimano HG30 chain
Formula hubs with Mavic CXP22 rims
Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x25c tires

I thought that too from the picture, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong. Tell me more about what you think the problem is.

Looking at it in the flesh, I think it looks good.

My first conversion...

took an old 12 speed and replaced the 26" wheels with 700c Vuelta Wheelset. New Shram single speed chain running from the 53 tooth chainring to the 16 tooth fixed gear. Obviously had to replace the brakes and rewrapped the handlebar with black and gray marble tape. Picking up new paint for the frame this week and should have it completed by next week. This bike rides awesome!

Thanks man. The only thing about that is the only difference besides what you just named off are the tires, pedals, and chain.

Tire were changed because the Schwalbes were to soft for street riding in my area. Started to tear apart fast. Pedals for practicality. Chain because the width is different between the cranksets. 1/8" on the Sram and 3/32" on the Truvative.

My SE Draft

I was never really into bicycles all too much, but needed a way to commute to campus. I went to the local bike shop and picked up an SE Draft SS, it was just so simple, I liked it. I started riding more a few weeks later, and through a friend months later stumbled upon the fixed gear bicycle. I quickly decided I liked it and decided to do a conversion on the stock rims / hub. It didn't end so well, and I ended up picking up the Deep v's. I then took the bike home from school and tore into it. I enjoyed taking my first bike apart completely and learning how things work on my own. Painted the frame-set satin green within week or so, and then put her all back together. I Tore up my grips the other night, so I polished up the bars (which cost me $2) a little bit and just wrapped the ends with what little scraps I had left. I know its not the fanciest or nicest ride, but I'm really enjoying the bike. Hopefully sometime in October I can pick up a new frame and crank-set. I still have a lot to learn, and am anxious for it.

Oh, and flame away. I can roll with constructive criticism.

and i hate to say it because everyone else will, but do you plan to get some pedals that allow you to ride with cages? i know some people dont like it, but even the best riders out there ride with some sort of foot retention if there are no brakes.

I get not having foot retention and no brake, but is there a reason to dislike the chain, other than for the color? I'm not trying to defend my hip white chain, lol! Just wondering if there was another reason behind it other than you thinking its aesthetically wrong, cause if not I like it on my bike.

The chainring is not actually on the left side, pic is flipped because I took the photo's with a built in mac cam. As for the pedals, I was using the stock pedals with a set of power grips, but I clipped a wall and smashed one. I could only find these as a quick replacement up here, and for now its working fine. They have rather large pins that haven't slipped out from under yet. And I'm still fairly quick to stop. I want newer pedals (probably with powergrips again, like how they feel) but will probably wait for new cranks as mine are one piece (1/2''?). I'm a broke college student so these things take me time... I like the way it rides and feels for now until I can make some serious upgrades. Thanks for the input.

This is what I bought a few months ago:

It's pretty much the same way I bought it, components-wise. But I replaced the rusted chain with a new KMC Z chain, Bontrager bartape, and a San Marco Aspide Arrowhead saddle. I flew over the bars the same day the picture was taken. Btw that's my foldie bike my gf bought for me that she's riding.

I decided that I wanted a frame with both F/R drilled for brakes and so I did and sold the Pista. I wasn't feeling the chrome anyway. Plus it was a 2004 model and QUITE used-looking. Bleh!

This is what I have now:

Yes yes hulk scheme played out. BUT Everything here was bought as-is from the previous owner off Craigslist for $ 350 'cause it was supposedly new. And it is! VERY CLEAN!!! He even threw in RB-018's w/ Fizik bartape bc we had some uh... unfavorable meet ups that ended up with him flaking out on me twice in a row but hey it's all good! Also tossed on the San Marco saddle.

Planning to get some brakes first. Then Gatorskins. Then... better pedals/clips/straps? What's the better logical progression of upgrades for this n00b? Don't worry, I'm not going to buy a green chain. You guys have taught me well!

And what do you think of the handlebar layout? I'd like to cut it down but the position is really growing on me and I think it goes well with the proportions of the bullhorns.

Finally got my Spinergy's on my bike!

The brake levers will change to carbon TT levers tomorrow when the postman brings them. I will rewrap the bars so just the horns are wrapped.

Then my bike will be complete. ahhhhhh....
