Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Are you guys with non machined front wheels and brakes only using your brakes during emergencies? I'm just curious because most of them don't like they're very worn out, and I'm debating whether or not to get my front machined or not because I use my brake often.

I think they're there just to satisfy the law, and very very rarely get used. If you use your brake often, eventually the colour/paint on the braking surface will disappear, and you'll have a self-machined wheel! A less than ideal solution, so get it machined if you want it to be cleaner and avoid all the screeching.

I assume you mean my Guerciotti. Not sure as the frame did not have a tubing decal when I got it. I need to do a little more research. My guess would be Columbus SP. Just doesn't feel SL light. Ride is butter smooth...

Machined sidewalls are a recent fad. People used caliper brakes on non-machined rim sidewalls for at least a century before someone decided machined sidewalls would be cool.

It looks like it's around a 60cm so SP is probably right. Although it could be SLX.

sokie--can you tell me where I can get some of those "Ride fixed" stickers?

You can run brakes on non-machined sidewall rims as long as they aren't powdercoated. For example, I have black velocity deep v rims that are anodized and I can run a brake on them just fine. The brake shouldn't rub off the anodization as far as i know.

I wasn't trying to be a dick. I just don't get the appeal of pieces of paper stuck in between spokes. I know the original origin of them but most people seem to really overdo them. To me, it looks cluttered.

i'm not going to be nice, though, because you saw people getting ****-talked all over the boards, for everything from big mistakes to spoke cards. you obviously saw someone else do it first, heard it was the cool thing to do, then did it so you could be cool and fit in, too. it's basic societal behavior of those with little self-worth or originality.

WJW......The spoke cards are from the past alleycat races I've done and it's just for keepsake/memories. You can pick some of those RIDEFIXED stickers at (www.iminusd.com)

Thanks for all the love guys, KEEP ON RIDING.

I wasn't really saying it was something I didn't like about the guy's bike, but ok. I didn't realize this was the "Post Your SS/FG Photos and Not Talk About Them" thread.

No harm, no foul.
