Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Female fixed gear riders

I guess because Im kind of out of the city now but I only see a couple here and there in Seattle, mostly guys. Are there a bunch of them in other cities? Seems like London has a lot of female cyclists and New York.
I dont know if this thread will continue for long but Id like to know how long most of you girls have been riding for! Do you go to events, only means of transportation, purely for the fun of it, how'd you get into it..etc?

There's quite a few women riding fixed in Toronto. For me, I've always been into MTB, followed by road racing. Singlespeed came along when I wanted something easy to maintain (and less attractive for thieves) for commuting.

Then along came fixed - which I first heard about from roadie friends in the UK, who like riding fixed for winter training. I learned a lot more from this forum and others like it! So I've been riding fixed for maybe 2 years or so.

Nowdays, in the city, I pretty much alternate between fixed and singlespeed, for both commuting and fun, and I only ride my geared bikes on longer weekend training rides.

Yeah I was looking at some Seattle fixed gear event photos, and I didnt see too many girls in them, but I havent been to one so I really dont know, that could be really misleading. For all I know there might be tons here. Either way, I see more guys. Id like to meet more ladies around here that are into it.

Thats pretty cool though. Sounds like I should check out Bellingham sometime! I have a friend that lives there.

When I look up any sort of youtube video on girl+fixed gear, all I get is one Juliet Elliott video, and its mostly an interview..thats about it.

my girl rides fixed... pretty good rider too*. if you're looking for someone with estrogen to ride with-- especially longer fixed gear rides when it's warmer-- she's usually bout it bout it.
she can show you the route through manayunk (a few climbs for good measure) to king of prussia. out and back is about 70 miles...

these ones seem cool:

I know about 3 or 4 girls on campus who ride fixed, one of them moved to Paris!

And I agree about the sausage fest part

there are a ton here in nyc. I think i'm going to get the group and head to london and have the london girls show us some love there.
You need to find those two girls you saw and stalk them. I've been riding since 2005, and at first, i saw maybe 2 or 3, but now, there was a huge explosion and there a so many chicks that ride. It's going to take time. Go out there and be a trend setter.

i've met one, but i've never seen her riding it, just walking it like a fashion accessory. My friend was dating her and built it for her. She's super hipster and everything.

Ya everyone in WA knows someone in Bellingham for the most part. Its a hard town to ride in, usually easier to roll with a lower gear since there are lots of random hills, but SF and Seattle can be pretty brutal that way too I suppose.

When and if I move to Philly that would be cool to be able to meet her. Im an average rider, but Id like to get better and riding with another girl would be awesome. That would be cool if she could show me around! Haha shes a good rider for a girl? Ahh boyfriends

IThat sounds like an awesome idea! know there is one or two videos Ive seen of this girl in Seattle who rides soo well. She can pretty much do everything a lot of guys are doing now as far as tricks go. Its hard to miss her bike, she has a pink front Aerospoke, and a black bike with pink grips, Im sure if I saw her around I wouldnt miss it but Ive never seen it, unfortunatly. Maybe one day Ill run into her.
Like i said there is probablly more than I know around here, but Seattle is tiny, probablly about 8 miles in all directions.

PS Sorry that I dont know how to quote this thing right! How do you multiple quote?

I've only seen a few girls on Drexel's campus with fixed bikes, and only two of them actually ride them, the others seem pretty hipsterish. My girlfriend rides a single speed I built for her, but I might set it up with a fixed cog so she can try it and see if she likes it (she probably won't, haha)

idunno about that.. my gf prefers fixed to freewheel in traffic, as the ability to intuitively increase and decrease your speed regardless of pedal position adds a certain stability to negotiating at lower speeds.
she acquired an impressive level of confidence in traffic after switching to fixed a few years ago. she went from riding like traffic was happening to her to riding like she was happening to it. the result is a much safer, more effective way of getting around a city not especially known for embracing bicycle culture.
she also got much faster in a much shorter amount of time, as she was forced to pedal through exhaustion rather than coasting, which she was thrilled about.

Building on what spOOki wrote, I feel much safer in traffic on a fixed gear bike.

=====

For some reason I find women on bikes very attractive, and it doesn't have anything to do with their looks or appearance.

I think I infer something about their character or personality from the fact that they ride.

How long has your gf been riding on the fixed side for?

Yeah, definitely a good amount of female riders in Chicago. A good friend of mine being one of them...and boy this girl can take a beating and keep on going. 2 hit and runs resulting in a broken collarbone each time and one pothole mishap that flipped her over her bars, fractured her elbow and some serious road rash.
