Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Haha, I just sold one of those. It was surprisingly light, but not very comfortable.

Bought a Shimano 105 rear caliper from lvleph on eBay, but it turns out that the reach is TOO FRIGGIN' SHORT for my frame. I'm pretty cheesed off about it.

I searched pretty extensively when shopping for frames, and the most I could find out about the IRO Phoenix was that it "might" require long reach brakes. So, I ordered the frameset and a set of Tektro R556 calipers. The minimum reach on the rear was barely short enough, and the reach on the front was WAY too long. Bought a Shimano 105 caliper for the front, and it worked so well that I decided I wanted another. Turns out that the rear won't work at all.

To clarify, I'm not angry at anyone but myself about it. I honestly didn't think it would be a problem. *shrug*

I bought some nice mud tires for my Infinity for $2.00 each. I think they came off a new bike that was upgraded. I also bought 4 new cables at a buck apiece from our local coop. I'm now into new parts for more than the original cost of the bike. The original owner paid over $500.00 for it. He drove it around the block once then returned it to the garage. The next day he was going to take it on a cruise with the wife. When he lifted it off the sidewalk onto the street the fork fell off. In frustration he threw into the backyard and let it rot for two years. I bought it at his garage sale for $5.00.It's my favorite bike right now but someone offered me $150.00 for it today. I hate to let it go but I also want to buy a new CCM Descent. They've been reduced from $600.00 to $240.00 lately . I wonder if I might be better off to keep the Infinity ?

Interesting. On my Motobecane I had to remove one full link and get the rear wheel farther forward in the track ends to make my standard reach rear caliper work... is that an option for you?

The 556 are extra long. The 538 is a good choice if you need long reach, but not too long. On one of my bikes I use a 556 in the rear and a 538 up front--works great.

^^^ yeah, striknein, sounds like you need 47-57 mm reach.
it can be confusing how some places refer to reg, long & xtra long reach while others call it short, med & long.
i'm not much for the skeleton look on the tektro 538's so i use r536 that i like a lot but am in the mood for a change/upgrade & have been looking at some shimano r650's that are 47-57mm.
good luck solving your dilemma...
