I can't wait to get mine in. The main reason I bought it was because cycling season is coming up...mad mileage will be achieved.

School always prevents mad mileage. I'm lucky if I get 50 miles of real riding (going to class doesn't count) a week. Fuuuuuu engineering. -_-

Tell me about it (not engineering, but all I do is school work then work work). I want to go ride bikes and they won't let me!

Go big or go home, IMO.

Waiting for my tax return. How much was your 500?

The maps feature on the 800 seems pretty cool though.

I've heard some bad things about the 800. It isn't a bad device; however, some people think it's simply too much. My coach has one and he says he kicks himself in the butt every ride because he wants the 500. I believe jdg feels the same way.

I got mine for $212 on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-Edge-...ht_2406wt_1185

The sale lasts another week or so. The 500's MSRP is $250. You can buy an upgraded version (cadence/speed sensor, HR strap) for $350.

Is there a lot of savings when buying a bundle, as opposed to say buying the 500 now, and a cadence sensor later?

What is the does the "speed" part of the speed/cadence sensor do? How's it different than the built in speed thing?

I don't think the savings are that huge. The HR strap is $40 on amazon and the cadence sensor is $36.

edit: you actually save more $$$!

It just gives a slightly more accurate reading. the real benefit is for the cadence. the GPS's speed is very accurate.

I definitely don't want HRM. Too much data and it feels weird. Cadence could be cool though.

Yeah. The 500 supports the cadence sensor but the 200 doesn't.

What's the issue with using revolutions on a rear wheel?

oh, and they are 32h
they are more flexible than a traditional spoke. ive used them on the front and NDS of wheels but always with rims that have a deep cross section to help compensate. unless you are heavy, the front wheels should be fine with the open pro and 32 spokes but i would look at going with competitions in the back. in road applications it is common to use competition spokes on the drive side and revolutions on the non drive side but this is also partly done to help balance out the spoke tension on a dished rear wheel.

here is a quick thread:https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...kes-drive-side

i would probably do some more research before you lace the wheel up. i know i had this same debate and ended up going with competition spokes all the way around. looking back i am happy i did so with the rear wheel but regret not using revolutions on the front. cutting weight is great but not when it threatens reliability.

+1 The 5 hour program that turned into a 23 hour program killed me last week.

in retrospect, i'd rather have a 500 then my 800.

maps are cool, but barely.
battery life is not cool
harder to read then 500
more fragile face
ITS GIANT

want both..... cuz i've used the maps to route long unknown rides with turn/turn directions (which is handy)

<EDIT>
500 is easy to read. 800 not so much

Yea I thought maps might be useful for Seattle this summer. But I guess if I ride a bunch with you then you got the maps and knowledge so I won't get lost. It's not useful for campus cuz (as you have seen via Strava) everything here is straight or sideways. No angles or twisty turns or anything. If I get lost here I just turn back in the general direction and chances are I'll get back to where I started by using the sun as my compass.

Used 500's are affordable though so I'll probably go that way. Tax return ploxx. Screw my mileage goal. Conspicuous consumption.

I haven't bought anything for my bikes in forever it seems (does a garmin 500 count ), but today I got the gf a celeste rubino tire, some compact drops and bar tape. I have a problem.

i really like my 500:
-easy to read screen
-good battery life
-customizable display
-clutter free(no sensor) install on my vintage and cross bikes (cadence/speed sensor on my road bike)
-mounts are cheap (ive got 4 bikes)

in a pinch i can use google maps on my phone.

the price really isnt so bad if you would compare it to buying a unit with comparable features and multiple mounts for each bike. it also helps i bought i from a retailer who looks to have had it miss marked. i bough the bundle cheaper than many places list the base unit. they honored the sale and then immediately raised the price. even i get lucky sometimes.
