Why my housemate took the bus home today after sprinting off the light... and into the ground.

Damn.

That chainring had to have seen a ton of use to fail like that.

Jesus. One time I got home after being out all day. I randomly glanced at my chainring, and noticed one chainring bolt was completely missing. Just gone. Obviously I quickly put a spare on there. But I wondered what could've happened if I had never noticed, or noticed the hard way.

Looks like I dodged a bullet.

He made it out with just a few scrapes on his leg. He didn't get going or anything, just stomped on it and then fell straight down. Nobody was behind him at the light so he didn't get ran over. We're in Portland, so necessarily there were other bicyclists. One wondered how it even happened, and another guy asked if he was 'roiding out.

I took the bike myself up here the other day (grade!), and that was definite torque. The next day he said the bike started creaking, likely indicating a growing crack. The sprint start was just the last straw.

As far as I know, the crown logo is on the older stuff. I'm not sure what era that denotes, or if that's even true. I should probably look it up...

I believe that the crown logo is the older Sugino logo.

Jeez. Was he trackstanding or did he have a foot down? What position were his cranks in when he tried to sprint?

He says he was coming down on his left foot for the sprint, which I can't quite put together from the picture, but I haven't thought about it too hard.

Is that hill a constant grade, or does it get steeper as it goes up? (If it's constant, it works out to a 9% grade for less than a half mile.) I just saw the de Ronde pictures on another forum; now those are some brutal hills.

It's pretty constant. I thought of it as my mini-Brynwood from de Ronde. I was there this year, and I agree. Those are some brutalllll hills.

it looks as if he put his chainring on the inside of the spider to correct the chainline, which would not allow the hidden 5th bolt to work without a long bolt and proper spacers. he prob rode without one, and thats why it failed on him. my guess.
