So, I was part of the big group buy a year and a half ago or so and ended up not getting in on a bike. Ever since then I've lusted for a Rob Roy. Now I have some fundage, but looked on IRO's website only to find they have been discontinued (as Tony said they would).

Was wondering if anyone might know where I can get a frameset? I know they must still be floating around out there. Does anyone have one for sale? A 58?

zaguatch...I had typed out a really smartass response to yours, but to sum it up (in an effort to catch more bees with honey) I've certainly tried. Was hoping some opportunists might see a guy waving money around for something they don't need anymore

Yo. I got a blank dark green Rob Roy that I want to sell. It's a 58cm. It's got a can creek headset and seatpost clamp on it. I got some other stuff like Avid Shorty canti's, handlebars, stems, brake levers... that you might want too. The catch is that I live in california. my friend told me about this thread. im moving and have to reduce my bike count (sadly). Hit me up if you're interested.

I was in on that group buy. Well worth the $150. Mine's a green 58, but not for sale. Unless you get a really good deal, I'd get a Cross Check..its a much more versatile frame.

I'm looking for ideas.

My green GB Rob Roy ended up being a bad weather commuter, complete with fenders, rack, lights...the whole works. It was a great all-purpose bike, except for the lack of gears, which was a handicap when fully loaded down and/or pulling the kiddie trailer. I just got a Surly Long Haul Trucker, which has supplanted the Rob Roy for those functions. So I have since stripped it down to its bare essentials and am thinking about how I might use it. I probably will put some fenders back on it, gear it down a bit, and use for recreational rain riding and pull the kiddie trailer on rail trails.

So, I've been through about a million incarnations with my Cross Check, including SS and FG trailer puller, and have finally found happiness with it setup 1x8 with Albatross bars and fenders. I couldn't get it to feel right in any of the other incarnations, and something asked me to put gears on it so I did. Then my wife fell in love with it, and vastly prefers it to her Trek MTB.

I have some other framesets, one of which I just traded for some Surly hubbed Delgado wheels. My first thought was to go back to SS with the Cross Check, because I love it so much and finally felt like I had the appropriate wheels to do it with. However, when my wife saw the new wheels she asked what they were for, and when I described the intended purpose she put her foot down. She started throwing out terms like "my bike" and I relented.

Well, I hate riding her MTB, despite it being a nice one, and don't like using my roadie for trailer duty and bumming around/commuting AND I need to do something with the sweet new wheelset, so here I am....

The plan, which seems to develop daily (as they all do) is my LX cantis with my Tektro MTB levers on On One Marys. It'd be a pseudo 29'er. I think I could squeeze some 40mm Ritchey Speedmaxes in a Rob Roy and have the ability to do some light single track duty around where we live. I have everything I need already except the On One Marys and, well, the frameset.

Problem is I see some pretty good deals on Redline Monocog 29ers and keep thinking that might be better if I actually intend on trail use at all. I know the Delgados aren't the biggest rim, but I could still get fatter tires in a true 29er than I could on the Rob Roy. Hell, honestly I'd get another Cross Check before the RR, but they're too expensive for me even used.

So, yeah, that's my plan for now, and only time will tell which way I head...but yeah, intended use will be bumming around, mostly, and pumping the local, relatively smooth singletrack.

Its funny that you mention a Redline Monocog, because I have an older one (26er) which I ride singletrack with. I have been tempted many times to set my RR up for singletrack, but whenever I take the monocog out on the trails, I realize pretty quickly that the RR just wouldn't be the right bike for the trails I ride. So I'm back to idea of just slapping some fenders on it and making it my rainy day all-purpose commuting/dicking around bike. Like I mentioned earlier, I just bought a Long Haul Trucker, which I plan to use for some touring. It'll work out great for touring and hauling large loads, but honestly, that bike is built like a tank and I don't really care to use it as a general purpose bike..its just too damn heavy and slow. Thats where the RR comes in. I've considered putting an internally geared hub on the rear, but I think I'll just stick with fg/ss for now...try to keep it light and simple.

Yeah, living in the rockies we have, well, pretty rocky trails...to that end I think that the Monocog would serve my trail-riding purposes much better. However, I fully expect more dorking around on the pathways and local haunts more to which I think a Rob Roy would be more fun. RR will probably be the way I lean.
