Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Advice on wheelsets

So I'm working on building my first fixed gear but I still don't know enough about wheelsets to decide for myself. I'm trying to find something that looks good, but my budget is limited to about $160. I would prefer deep-v rims, but I'm not limiting myself to them.

Here are the best three deals I have found so far. Are these crap? Too expensive? Good buys?

https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...&productId=193

https://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Track-Bike-F...3%3A1|294%3A50

https://cgi.ebay.com/Track-Fixed-Gear...3%3A1|294%3A50

I appreciate any help. Thanks!

The Mavic CXP 22 + Formula combo is by far the best of the three.

If you can swing an extra $30, I think these are worth it.

yeah i've been searching for months and then i found those mavics in an ad on the right side of my screen as i was creating this very thread.

and lol at the RTR carleton.

i also really like weinmann's colored deep-v rims, but they are a bit over my price range and dont include cogs and lockrings.

and if you could elaborate as to why the CXP33s are better, Nightdiver, i would appreciate it. i'm still unfamiliar with many of the specific differences between the two.

thanks you guys!

The 33s are a taller, more aero rim. Almost as tall as a Deep V. It looks better, IMHO, and may be a tad bit stronger.

Don't get me wrong. CXP22s are strong. I've had them come stock on my last 2 cyclocross bikes (Cannondale XR800 and Felt F1X).

i think you can get weinmanns for about that. most places online sell for closer to 180, but you could maybe get them for cheaper at your lbs. I have both Weinmann dp18 and Mavic cpx22 rims (both with formula hubs) and I MUCH prefer the mavics.

ebay is by far the cheapest place i've found the weinmanns, but none of the stores that sell them for $160 include lockrings or cogs. i'm really starting to like the deal from bicyclewheelwarehouse.com because they also allow you to choose from several colors of hubs, rims and spokes.

Weinmann dp18, the rims on them are identical to those on Supercycle medalist, one of the worst department store "road bikes".
We sell them, machine built, at our store and, I tell you, it takes some time to true the ****tiness out of them.

try velocity razr or aerohead from Benscycle.net they have cheap prices and lots of spoke count and color availabilities.

I ordered a set of CXP33's with double butted spokes to Formulas from BWW, and I'm happy with the purchase. The cog and lockring the wheels ship with aren't of quality. Just get the 15t to save yourself 4 dollars, because you'll be removing it anyway.

I bought this set from the same place. Good wheels. I like them as much as the Weinman dp18s, which I also own. They came to about $160 or so, if I remember right, once shipping and tax are added, and yes I had to pay tax, being from CA.

I also bought a set of these recently: https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...&productId=204
The best deal I've seen so far on a decent set of fixie wheels. Haven't mounted them yet, but they look solid and seem to spin just fine, and I'm not afraid of loose ball bearings (kinda like that approach actually). I wish they had been available when I bought the more expensive set.

Your other two choices appear to have both a fixed cog and freewheel, if I read the ads correctly. That may be a bonus for you, but keep in mind, it's only relevant if the gearing works for you.

so i'm finally getting ready to make my decision, and i find these: https://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1533

now so far, i've read from several threads here on BF that mavics are much better thanvuelta. however, since bikeisland offers free shipping, the zerolites i linked above would be atleast 70 dollars cheaper than the CXP22s. also, the color scheme of the zerolites works much better with my bike.
i just wish i knew a little more about the quality of their components

a quality build can do a lot for components of lesser quality. When you get the Vueltas, ride them for 50 to 100 miles and then take them to an LBS to get them re-tensioned. Also keep an eye on the bearings; replace them at the first sign of degradation.

Even better...if the wheels have not been hand finished have a good wheel builder check and service them before you ride them to ensure they are properly tensioned and de-stressed.

It will be worth the money as if this is done right those wheels may never need to be tuned up again.
