had both plastic and metal, snapped both. now on to a DIY power strap made out of my gf's sturdy leather unwanted aeropostale belt. and yes, i burned out the aero logo.

I' suggest snapping comes from too loose a strap so the force then is placed on the toe clip where it should not really be.

I only ride metal clips, and yes, they are a wear item, they break frequently. From my experience, do not buy MKS clips. I'm unsure if the colored ones are a different alloy or strength than the plain ones, but the last pair of MKS i had were gold... and they broke in under a week.
I replaced them with a 12 dollar pair, and they work great, probably going to invest in some double straps soon.

i was riding yesterday and was just entering a trail and my clip caught something on the ground and got all twisted...and sort of jammed up my toes too but nothing major...i tried bending the clip back to it's original shape and it snapped, the alloy is pretty weak when bent but i will probably get another set of alloys because they work great as long as i am not jamming them into the ground...doh!

I prefer plastic. I'd like to try the All-City Classic Doubles.

Rode for roughly 4 years on plastic clips and nylon straps. Never had any problems.
Metal clips for a few weeks now with the All-City double straps. Haven't had any problems.
The clips do make a noise when they hit the ground if you're riding the bottoms of the pedals, which is rare, but does happen.
I find the metal clips much more aesthetically pleasing, but note no real functional difference.

i got mks clips and double straps... and they are real nice, plastic cages must bend and flex like a *****...
if your worried about life span stay away from the alloy cages but plastic cages are false economy....

I used to ride clipless on my road bike but recently got some MKS pedals / clips for my fixed as I didn't want to have to carry around another pair of shoes.
To be honest I still think clipless >>>>>>>> everything but for general riding I can't see how you can break metal or plastic clips unless you crunch them into the ground.

plastic or metal, double gate toeclips hurt my feet. (i have narrow feet)
i prefer metal double toeclips and run them on my fast bike but plastic ones are more comfortable for my beater bike.

hmm i can check mine when i get back to town, but i dont think i have small ones. maybe it will give you a point of reference. on my kilo, with 700c front and 165 stock cranks, i have no toe overlap, just a bit of rub. my clips are perfect. all city quad gates FTW
