I have a Bob Jackson Vigorelli which has developed a nick here and there (more here and there than i'd like).
I'm used to powder coat so it's to be expected that paint is going to hold up worse than what i'd like, but regardless-- do any of you have experience with auto grade clear coat? does this look bad over top of original paint? most importantly-- is it durable?

I have used it before. It will work.
However, without an oven to bake it on you probably won't get the results you want.

are you talking about spray auto clear coat? as long as you do it in thin coats (so it doesn't run) it will look totally fine. however you need a LOT of coats. it isn't really that durable (in my opinion) so you just have to make sure it's thick enough that any nicks only go through the thickness of the clear and not into the paint. i've done it with 6-8 coats and it still scratched through just leaning against an unpainted pole.

Options:

1) Powdercoat it

2) Get a rag and put it inbetween your frame and whatever you're locking to (like a top tube protector)

3) Deal with the scratches. Afterall, it's a bike, and it's going to get scratched.


In my experience, the clear coat isn't going to help much, and isn't worth the trouble.

i meant specifically taking it to an auto body place and having them bake a clearcoat on.

is this even an option?

I'd say it isnt worth the trouble. Clearcoats still scratch (down to the paint often), especially if your scratches are from locking up.
