Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? cost-efficient shipping

hello,

i'm moving to san francisco soon, and naturally my bike must come along. i've done some online research, and have found that i have a few options. for packaging, i can buy an "air-caddy" - expensive, but reusable, which is a plus. i could also get a large box from a bike shop, which would probably be free.

what would you recommend i use to package the bike? and what is the cheapest method of shipping (ups, usps, dhl, etc.)? i'm attending a two-month music festival in western north carolina. i'd like to bring my bike there, as well, and ship it to sf in august.

my bike is a swobo sanchez fixed gear, so it'll be light...

thanks!
nico

bike-box from bike shop cut to size.
newspaper & bubble-wrap & zip-ties & tape
fedex usually is the cheapest if you do it online & take the package to a fedex location
or amtrak - drop it off / pick it up yourself at the train station.

Check out fedex ground. I shipped my bike - a little under 20 pounds - from NYC to Los Angeles for $69 recently - I used a cardboard box from a bike shop.
