Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I'm around there with the same gearing.

On my road bike, about 55mph going down a huge steep straight hill. That was a thrill

On my fixed I don't have a speedometer, but probably around 35ish.

I don't know how fast I was going, but I know where it was. Going down four mile canyon/boulder canyon. This was after making the 13 mile climb. 48/18 up, 48/18 down. I can't wait to do it again next week, with a freewheel this time....

I never rode the canyon before I moved for some reason... but I did do this ride just about every morning.
You can hit some pretty high speeds on the decent, and if you go at the right time (round 10am iirc) the highway is practically empty, sans other cyclists, lovely scenery to boot.

Man I miss Colorado... cant wait to go back in a few weeks.

This thread made me want to see how fast I could go, so I called my friend and asked him to bring a computer over, which he forgot. We decided to go riding anyway, and happened on one of those roadside radar machines by accident.

I managed to get the machine to say 30mph, which was a lot harder to hit than I thought it would be. I have a 48x15 set up, though, and I know I could have done better on a higher gear. In my defense, it was hard to time the sprints with the part of the street the detector monitored, which was only about 30 or 35 meters.

It kind of made me want a fixed/fixed hub so I can have a 13t handy for non-traffic days.
