Handlebar question from newb

Hello there,

This is my first post, as I'm ready for a fixed. Be gentle. I spend most of my time over in the SS forums on MTBR.

Anyway, I am planning on building my first fixed on a track frame and I really want to use the Nitto RB-021 pursuit bars with my Thomson stem.

Problem is, the stem is a 31.8mm clamp and the bars are 26. The steerer is a 1 1/8.

Is it sketchy to use shims, or is there another 31.8 bullhorn out there that has the same dimensions as the Nitto?

profile makes some w/ 31.8 clamp, they have a nice comfy flattish section by the stem.

shims are commonly used, though i usually hear them for 25.4->26mm, i don't personally know of any 31.8 bullhorns.

youre right, mucky. I've never seen an expensive, CF road bike w/ a 31.8 stem. Ever.

mm?

I'm saying that oversize bars are used on nearly every high end, light weight road bike. You were trying to imply that they are somhow bad for low weight bikes, but they clearly aren't as they are used on some of the lightest bikes in the world.

It's not just a MTB thing.

bigger tubing is stronger and can be drawn thinner to be lghter. my new setup is oversized.

Sometimes instead of creating a thread that's going to get a bunch of idiotic responses, you should just look for yourself.

Yea obviously I found those before I posted, which I was asking if they're prone to slippage, etc.

I really wanted to used the RB021s, but I decided to just go with some 31.7 Deda Pista bars because I'm over using the shims. I also got these on craigs for a deal.
