Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Hey all... I'm back!

First, I want to say thanks to all those who donated their time and money to help The San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

I had one of the best weeks ever! The weather from S.F. to L.A. was impeccable, the people were interesting, and the Pista was outstanding. I started off with 42/16 gearing, but was destroying my ankles by spinning out. There were a lot of long, fast descents, and some strong tailwinds. About halfway through, I found a bike shop and convinced the owner to sell me a 53 tooth and new chain for dirt cheap. My life was so much better after that. It slowed the climbing a bit, but everything else was perfect.

The folks I rode with were on their 5th Lifecycle ride, so they knew how to do it in style. We were always the last to leave camp, and the last to get in, but were still some of the fastest riders out there. We did 3 separate 100 mile rides in under 5 hours of riding time each, but would take 2 hour lunches, go swimming in the ocean, and drink margaritas on the beach in the middle. We saw and did a lot of things that 99% of the other riders missed out on.

Anyway, here is a link to some PICTURES.

Thanks again to everyone who made this ride possible...
Torrin

Good job! Sounds like a fun time. You must have been flying to run a 53/16!

Awesome! I'm planning a longer trip this summer, and was starting to think maybe I need a geared bike. But you have reassured and inspired me. Still not sure whether to do it fixed or SS...

Hey Torrin,

Congrat's!! Now that I've ridden out on the left coast a little I'm in awe of your fixie touring abilities. Question: when you swapped for the 53 what kind of chainring did you get? Was it just a random road-style ring or was it track? I gotta prep for ragbrai.org

We had breaks about every 20 miles.

I ran one brake on the bike... necessary for some of the disturbingly long downhills. It was pretty funny, I'd pass everyone going up the hills, then they'd pass me back on the way down.
