New to forum, just built ghetto bianchi grizzly SS
*****deleted because it started too much trouble.

Looks like a waste of a perfectly good geared bike. Sorry, just being honest.

You can call it what you will but at least I didn't cut the braze ons off or hack the frame up. |

New tires, tubes, new grips....put me at $135.
EDIT: And why did you take the rear brake off? |
Leave it the way it is. Looks and am sure it rides great.
|
I used a hammer and a screwdriver to get the cassette off, just unscrew all of the shields and stuff and the bearings will fall out. Then put the freewheel in a vise and turned the wheel to get it off. I picked up a single speed freewheel off of ebay for $10.95. It looks very clean, I like it! I like the idea of a SS for some simple trail riding, good build!

He basically just turned it into a C.U.S.S. |
"Question, is there a common tool that can remove the crank besides a crank puller? I'd rather not buy tools"
hammer, undo the bolt and beat it like anything a plastic one is better, as it don't do as much damage it is'nt the best way though by any means, you usually damage something id buy a puller, they can be quite cheap and are very effective |

ok so this isn't exactly a true conversion...XT rear der used as chain tensioner. I'm on a budget right now though and plan on truly converting it down the road. I bought this bianchi off a guy who road it once or twice. Paid $100 for it. Tires were rotted from storage. New tires, tubes, new grips....put me at $135. Question, is there a common tool that can remove the crank besides a crank puller? I'd rather not buy tools.

How did you manage to get tires, tube, and grips for $35 after tax and any shipping, if applicable? The cheapest mountain bike tires are $17 each from the shop I work at and Oury grips run about $12. Tubes are $5. That would put the minimum at over $60 after tax.
EDIT: And why did you take the rear brake off? The only XT component on this bike was the rear derailleur. It had an LX fr, has LX hubs laced to mavic rims...grip shifters weren't shimano they were some brand I've never heard of. Brakes are cheap dia compe. However the crank is a white industries which is pretty sweet. The frame is tange prestige so the bike is incredibly light. It's also lugged steel which is cool. Nitto bars and stem(I'm fairly certain). I'm glad I got rid of the extra gearing and cabling...it looks a lot better now, imo. Rear brake came off because I've ridden SS for years with just a front brake. I check the brake every time before I ride it. |
Found the exact same one on craigslist...
http://newyork.craigslist.org/fct/bik/1211439780.html mine had those tan-ish colored tires as well...they were rotted. |
Nice frame! I have a soft spot for Grizzlys... I have 4 of em at the moment... gotta love 1" threadless ;)

Why no rear brake? no brake and MTB tires seems sketch, especially if you actually hit any trails that aren't flat. are those the Sugino-made W.I. cranks? if so, might want to consider swapping out down the road. whatever you do, have fun riding that thing :thumb: |

except a B.O.S.S./C.U.S.S./whatever you feel like calling it has horizontal dropouts. A derailleur, Singleator, etc. will always be needed with a Grizzly. i cringe looking at that RD. probably damaged.
why didn't you just get indexed trigger shifters? you could have found some used ones for next to nothing. i would rather have seen it with gears. at least get a single speed tensioner and put a rear brake back on. and get some black or brown ourys. |
You could have profited by about $300 on that bike if you hadn't screwed around with it.
Put the rear brake back on unless your dad is a dentist. |

It is your bike, ride it however the hell you like, but you said you were on a budget and you could have had a starter track bike with the profit if you resold the Grizzly
|
Making a big profit is just speculation. That guy is living in a dream world if he thinks he can get $500 for it. Please...no way I could have made that. I might have been able to make around $200. So what then? I've got $300 to buy a bike with a worse frame.
You cringe looking at the R der? It's functioning perfect and isn't damaged at all. The orange ourys are staying. Why would I want a cheap starter bike when I've got a decent hardtail mtb? I wasn't looking for a track bike. I was looking for a MTB. I can see why I'm getting criticism for the rear brake. I'll think about putting it back on. However, all this talk about selling the frame, or keeping it as a geared bike isn't necessary because you're wasting precious internet bandwidth by posting. http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...ahmbulance.jpg |

Either way, it's a solid frame, and as long as you're riding, it's not a bad thing. |
