Would this make for a good conversion?
I have a small window in which I could purchase a 1973 56 cm blue Peugeot px-10, in relatively good condition. I want to convert it, but I'm not sure it's worth it. Opinions or advice is greatly wanted/needed. Thanks in advance!

you should really ask on c&v... those guys know all the years for french and swiss bbs and will be able to tell you if the frame is made of half decent tubing or not. on fgss all you're going to get is a lot of carping about what colour deep vees will go with that frame.

you have plenty of horizontal range on those drop outs. getting good chain tension will not be a problem.

PX-10 conversion? If it is an actual PX-10, it is a sought-after bike... converting would be sacrilege to a lot of folks here and in C&V.

After a quick search, it doesn't look like a px-10...

Don't worry about what it's worth on eBay, worry about what it's worth to you.

But...
A PX-10 is Peugeot's top of the line race model and much sought after, finding one is somewhat rare these days and seeing one get stripped and converted makes some of us shed a tear.
I've been trying to find one for about 5 years.

I know it isn't the PX10 track bike, which I think is the more sought after version. Either way, I know I'd use it more as a single speed, and it does need work. If I'm going to put the time/money into it, I'd rather just customize it to my liking.
I honestly don't care about flipping this for more money. I just want a nice base to start working off of.

Also, I'd be getting this bike with components for $80. Good deal or too high?

It really depends... Some people say that the cottered cranks need to go, plus the french BB may cause issues (although I think someone is now making an affordable one).
I spent $100 on mine which was "upgraded" to a triple ring crank, new front deralleur and (kinda) modern BB with cheap new(ish) alloy wheels. It really depends on how much you want to spend converting it. You could get buy with a suicide hub (track cog, bb lockring) and new chain.

I bought a bike with cottered cranks that initially worked just fine. After less than a year they were toast. Can't really speak to the quality of them in general, but my experience with them was very dissapointing.

yes, a cottered crank is fine and yes, a suicide hub will work (provided you do it right, but that's a different thread), but if you start to put any appreciable amount of km's into this thing you will find yourself on the upgrade path sooner or later... probably sooner.
so, if this is the frame you want, by all means do a cheapo conversion on it. but keep in mind that it will be only a temporary solution and the time will fast come when you 'give in' and buy new wheels and a track crank and all that stuff.
